I'm about to change the transmission oil in my auto GV. Is it as simple as draining/refilling or do I need to change the filter/screen, get the bands adjusted etc?

Will (gravity) draining get rid of all of the old oil (from the torque converter etc) or does the oil need to pumped out by the mechanic?

FWIW the transmission shifts OK and has no other issues that I can tell.

I have an auto vitara and was talking to the transmission guy when i got my oil changed. He recommends that you just change the oil in the pan, and replace the gasket and filter thats all that needs doing.

A full change where all the oil is pumped out and completely replaced is only recommended if theres problems with the transmission as the new oil can break down deposits around seals within the transmission.

Its a pretty simple job i just paid someone else to do it as its easier and better than getting mud in eyes.

I checked the service manual and there's no mention of a filter/screen. Am I missing something here?

All it mentions is draining and refilling.

If the oil pan is removed the filter sits up inside there. If the transmission still shifts fine it's probably ok if it's not changed but probably worth checking with a transmission place and see what they say. It cost me $120 for oil change gasket and filter to have someone do it.

Is there only 1 filter and 1 gasket (for the oil pan)? I've found a few different suppliers in the US and some list 1 filter/gasket but others list 1 filter and 2 gaskets (one bigger then the other)???

If there was a problem and you had to drain the whole box, the return line is taken off the geabox from the radiator and once the fluid starts to run out and spit you turn the car off.

Theres a magnet in the pan , it usually has a small amount of buildup around it , but a lot of metal in the pan and on the magnet will indicate a problem.

unlike some other auto's the filter is a metal screen , not a paper element like in some cars , if anything a wash and refitting. it wouldnt hurt to remove the pan and clean it and the filter , and refit the pan with a new gasket.

as far as adjustments , there are none , its just a fluid change.
