gday guys

ive had my car (1993 swb sierra softop 1.3L) close to 4 months now and from about a week after i got it it has sometimes made a very annoying noise when turning the ignition.. it doesnt happen all the time but it sounds like im turning the key with the engine already started... so i wait and retry and often get it to go again

any ideas on what it might be?

and secondly.. just beofre i turned my ignition off and for about 2 seconds after i turned the car off it was still running until it slowly died.. was bit confused so started the car up and tried again, same thing.. any ideas?

No1. sound's like you need a starter or the ring gear on the fly wheel's worn

no2. could be idling to high, or the ing switch is a lil on the dodge side, but I'd be looking at idle first..

I'm going to have to do a search on the first problem..

and I am going to guess its the idle as well, as I was trying to fix that today, but it all got to fidly and i had to be somewhere so i just left it idleing at 1100rpm. shall fix that tomorrow 750rpm is the correct idle right?

750 to 850 is nice..

does the noise happen every time you go to start? Or just on the odd start up??

If every time I'd almost put money on the starter motor, if not, could be either one, starter or ring gear..

My car started to do the same. Still went after u turned the key off. Could be pre ignition or timing out. Or it could be ur ignition barrel on its way out. Mine just failed the other day. Only starts when the key returns to run.

that tech thread might be the way to fix it.. ill have to get my head around what is going on in it before i can give it a go but. anyone in cairns willing to help?

everytime will be your starter motor teeth.. occasionally will be the ring gear on the flywheel.. Had the same issue.. next time it happens.. try rolling the car in gear, try to get the motor to turn over a bit and try starting again..

chances are your up for a new fly wheel.. so might as well replace the clutch, throwout bearing and spiggot while your in there.. while the starter motor is off, give it a good clean out and make sure its working as it should.. throwing out far enough on the engagement and disengaging properly.

they smell great on a bbq....

no tech threads on this as far as im aware.. but its cretainly an easier job pulling the motor and box out of the car.. alignment wise, clean up wise, refitment wise..

what would the point in this be? the car still starts, it just needs to be taken back to off and then try started again..

it sounds like the car has been started and the key is being turned again?

Which why i think its just the usual clicky starter problem

Eliminate the simple things first and check that your battery is not on the way out. If your battery has dropped a few plates it will make a clicky noise as the starter spins but doesn't engage. This could also explain why it only happens ocasionally too...

5mins checking with a multimeter is much better than blowing a whole day on doing a flywheel.

if the starter grinds then you try again and it works the solenoid is probably full of crap and is getting stuck, you can pull it and try and clean it but generally once you get a starter problem you are just stalling time till you replace it anyway

roughly how much would i be looking at if i were to take it to a mechanic to identify and fix the problem? cheers

took the car in to get fixed wednesday afternoon and diagnosis was the starter motor was broken, which lead to the flywheel being fairly well rooted.. Getting a new excedy clutch, a new flywheel and startermotor in total costing $820
