GV 2000 model, V6 Auto

Have a very noisy fan belt when start from cold. Have replaced both fan belts and made adjustment but this didn't make any difference. Any one have any suggestions?

You sure it's tight enough? I know you stated that you made adjustment but I had same prob when I had by 2000 Auto GV and alto the belt seemed tight I nipped it up some more and it never happened again.

What sort of noise? Squealing?

Remove the belts one at a time and start the engine to determine which belt is making the noise - whilst you have the belts off spin the idler/tensioner pulleys by hand, replace any that don't rotate smoothly & silently.

It's not unusual for belt squeal to occur after a cold start due to the added load on the alternator as it recharges the battery, this is typically caused by a loose or worn belt and if left long enough the pulley may develop a glaze which leads to further slipping, so if it is your alternator belt that is squealing, examine the pulleys for glazing.

put a little bit on all the pulleys and you'll be laughing. With A/C off, I get a tiny squeal on cold start-up (~1sec) with A/C on and lights on, (~2secs) but then it goes away.

My mechanic suggested this as my A/C pulley is a little off centre.

Like others have suggested, the belts need to be f'n tight.

^^^ I know it works, but it just doesn't seem right to me to basically mask the fact that it's slipping by greasing it so it doesn't damage the belt/pulley while it slips.

My old man suggested soap the other day, just rub a cake of soap on the pulley/belt a little bit. Same principle as the grease, nowhere near as proper a fix...

He's on the money, they need to be TIGHT, a leaver may be needed, like a lok screw driver or the like's, but HAVE to be tight. Multi rib is not like the ole V belt's, multi need tension on em..

Well i had the same problem and had a read here through all the posts and thought the candle idea seemed like the best option....

So i fabricated my own "candle wax belt noise reducer 3000" (it doesn't get much dodgier than this) this thing worked an absolute treat...... yes it's a tea candle screwed to the end of a thin offcut of ply..... I wonder how long it will take the wife to realise one of her candles is gone.....

mine was just giving me the shits... so i just leant on the leaver bar and tightend it up.. got about another 14mm on the adjuster.. no more sequel

I replaced mine. They squealed. I tightened them up more. they still squealed. So I tightened them right up and now they don't squeal.

Shame 60% of the belt is shredded all over the engine bay already but hey, I know how tight it needs to be next time.
