g'day . got a few problems with my 86 lwb sierra.
firstly when i got it it was all runing sweet. from what i was told it had been rebuilt 20k ago , then one day i fil up at the servo then after that wouldnt idle at all . so after driving it around trying to keep the revs up when stopping (other then when its cold it idles high) it just decides its going to rev at 2k plus all the time, which is fine when actually driving but not when stopped . also when i turn it off it trys to keep runing then backfires like someone doing a key banger , as funny as it when at the shops it cant be good for it lol.
so is timing ? or what else could be causing this ?
i just want it to idle properly and not sound like someones shooting somone when i stop

i have no idea what it could be, but my best guess is that somone has rebuilt the motor and not done the carby. i would replace leads, plugs, coil, rotor cap and button, then save up till i could afford to get my carby rebuilt by a pro.... that or injection

I had a similar problem just over a month ago with the exact same symptons. Im pretty sure it was dirty fuel and as it happended after you filled up that may be the cause. Get some CRC carby cleaner and spray it into the carby while revving the guts off it. If still bad, rev it and stick your hand or something over the carby and apparently that sucks anything out of the carby jet.

Seems to be some bad fuel around. though perth its a long long way away from here..
I opened up my carby and cleaned it all out and it was all good, for a day, then it fouled up again. Im getting another carby and Im going to flush out the whole system new tank and filters before fitting it.
New tank is just because the current one only holds about 25L atm.. :/

Just out of curiosity, do you run a fuel filter after the pump, before the carbie? Worth doing if you dont...

Does it ping? If so it could running lean due to an air leak, or broken vacuum hose. Take a can of carb cleaner and spray it around all your hoses, flange mating surfaces the carb etc. If the idle changes at all when spraying you have found your leak.
Pay attention to your temps especially on long cruises. If it is running lean and heating up you need to be careful you don't burn a valve on your new engine.
A quick tune up filter etc. Is a good recommendation. You acn also try revving up the engine and covering the carb with your hand, or something air tight that won't get sucked in. do this 4 or five times in a row.
What this does is cause an massive amount of vacuum that sucks debris out of the jets and bowls. Half the time it works for good, 1/4 of the time you have to do it again in a week,and 1/4 of the time it don't work at all.
If the engine will run with your hand tightly over the carb you definitely have a vacuum leak.
Oh last but most important, replace your PCV valve. They are only good for about 3k miles, and can cause some shitty problems when they go bad.
At $3.00 U.S. (That's only what $1.00 now in AU armsup ) they are a cheap solution a lot of the time.

have a look at you're vacume hoses on the carby, an ignition prob of some sort. coil connections, plugs, duzzy. have a good look at all these parts and make sure there is no moisture in the dizzy cap and that it is clean.
