Hi, I am about to buy a set of OME struts and springs for my vitara and im going to give it a go installing myself as it seems like an easy enough job. Have 2 questions though that i cant find the answer to and want to be sure before i go taking things apart.

What is the easiest way to undo the nut on the top of the strut? I understand that the shaft of the strut would just spin. Do they have a slotted section or anything to prevent the shaft spinning to remove the strut from the amount.

It's the nut that sits in the centre of this.


Also what is the tightening torque of this nut? the only info i can find is the upper mounting bolts at 14-22ft/lbs is the strut bolt also the same?

rattle gun sorts it out, doing it by hand loosen them (not remove) while the wheels are on the ground and the side load might hold it enough.

i used a rag and a vice grip on the strut shaft.

Thanks Royce. I don't own a rattle gun, should get one though, so will have to see how it goes by hand. I guess worst case I can take it to my mechanic and get him to loosen it off a bit so I can still undo it at home.
Any idea how tight to do it up?

Dunno bout everyone else but mine has a large lock nut that the top of the strut keys into. I hold this with the ole pipe wrench and tighten or loosen the nut.

vice grips work if you dont have a rattle gun, make sure you have spring compressors on there too, might seem like common sense, but i know people who have tried to do it without

Vitara's have a separate spring and strut.

Thanks guys will give the pipe wrench a go and if that doesn't work I'll stick it in a vice.

ive never used a spring compressor on my vitara. when i did my strut mount flip i didnt even jack the car up.
