cause my dad is dry, i now have to make sure all my mods are legal. I KNOW!
soo my plan is to keep my suspention stock (for now) and go for 235/75/r15 maxxis bighorns, which should keep me satisfied for a while.
problem is: are they legal, for a lwb vit/ how can i get them legal
lift: legal limit is 50mm total (bigger tyres, sus lift, body lift combined), is this correct?
was thinking to maybe go for something like the ironman 35mm kit so tyres and lift will be around 50 mm lift
any guidance, info, tips ect will be much appreciated.
thanks

Hey pretty sure the raise limit counts for body and suspension lift, not tyres. But tyres I'm pretty sure for a Sierra 235/75r15 are just above the legal limit but they will be fine. Thy won't stick out to the cops and look stupid. If I'm wrong I'm sure people will correct me.

Insurance won't pay out IF the mods contribute to the accident.
For example, larger tyres affect braking, so run up the back of someone, and they'll argue that the tyres contributed...
However, 99% of the time the insurance company will just pay out without looking at the mods...

i think you can do a 2inch suspension lift 2 inch body lift and 2 inch bigger tyres and this is legal aslong as you get the body lift approved

Not in QLD.....
You can lift the vehcile by 1/3 the factory distance bteween the bump stop and strike plate, BL is approvable AFTER application, and increase in tyre diameter of 15mm only.
So most vehicles thats 2" + BL + next size up tyre. So 215/70/15 instead of 205/70/15.

lay off your dad mate, how would you feel if you watched your son buy a car pay through the nose for insurance, then talk about mod's that make insurance void.... dry balls or not, his still just doing his dad role, which isn't so common in todays society....
235s, 50mm suspension lift and it won't look any different, but should perform better off road, if your from sydney you prob's do a bit of fire trail work, and some technical hill climb stuff (thats whats around). so this setup will be perfect, just save up for some air lockers, and you will have a killer stock looking set of wheels

Id say your father is a very responsible parent, few and far between, consider yourself one of the lucky few who has such a caring parent.
Put yourself in your fathers shoes for a sec, not your own 10" tall and bullet proof shoes, with wisdom, he is trying to get you to understand the consequences of your possible actions.
Think about it a little, even a micro second.

from my understanding if the mods are engineered, the insurance is valid. check out Darkhorse's build

call the insurance company and ask all those questions, chances re they prob re ok with the mods, or they'll say no even if they re completely legal
and if your insurance comp re not covering you any little mod in any kind of accident, just try to call a different insurance company until you reach one that approves your mods in an accident... Ask them every little question you have for a "legal" set up, and your "dream" set up to see wht they say
in that way you can calm your dad telling him the mods would be covered in the accident blah blah
hey larry, it can be done legally have a look at this build up.
auszookers.com/index.p...sc&start=0
BL of any size has to be engineered in NSW, but 2" isn't a drama to do so. Just not cheap. Get a kit from just_cruisin on here, don't do a dodgy with RHS or anything.
My 3" sus, 2" BL and 31s passed easily - just be careful about things like brake lines, rim offsets, camber/castor and stuff, because they will measure all that, wheel track, wheelbase etc to make sure you haven't done anything ridiculous. Also helps if everything is clean and neat and looks like it's been done properly. Get a wheel alignment and carwash before you go for the inspection!
I went through John at Consulmotive, who's RTA approved. Google will get you the website. Call him and tell him what you want to do, get all the mods done, then book in for the inspection, otherwise it'll cost you time and money to go back and get each thing approved individually.
Happy to answer any questions you have if I can.

sweet, thanks.
how much did it cost ya, if you dont mind me asking?
i dont want anything outrageous, probably just something like 235s 2 inch lift, thats about it to be honest.
is it worth me getting the lift engineered while im at it, even if it is only 2 inch?
thanks, much appreciated help

2" suspension only? That and 235s you'll be fine without eng.
If you go body lift, which you'll need to go any bigger with the rubber, you'll need approval.
Oh, the other expensive thing I forgot to mention was that you'll need to get the speedo recalibrated if the bigger tyres throw it out more than about 7% I think. 235s won't make that much difference, but 31s will for example.
Inspection and certificate was about $450 from memory. Speedo recal was about the same.
If insurance is an issue, try Just Car Insurance - good for modified cars, even for young'uns.

i know it'd be fine in most situations, but dad is paranoid about this kind of thing after getting advice off people at work.
nrma said wont be void as long as it is registerable aka RTA guidelines aka FML. might just have to stick with 215/75s
ive heard that you can sometimes get a different placard saying the stock tyre size is bigger, therefor letting you legally put bigger tyres?
maybe get 16" rims and a GV one?
this shit is doing my head in.

so as long as its engineered, its fine by RTA?
was hoping not to spend so much, but whats another 450?
i guess if im paying for engineering might as well get bigger lift. calmini is a bit different to get engineered, right? whats involved in that?

Engineer certified by RTA signatory engineer = 100% legal and roadworthy - you have to get a Blue Slip after the certification for the RTA to process it.
You don't need an engineer to certify an off-the-shelf (OME/TD/Ironman etc) 30-40mm suspension lift, or marginally bigger tyres.
Replacing tyre placard is opening a whole other can of legal worms methinks.

by that do you mean the 30mm diameter increase? cause that still leaves me with 215s :/
would it be considerably cheaper for just tyres eng?
i went into bob jane and the smallest bighorns they have are 30x9.5 ($190) so probs go with them if getting eng, if not probs bfg km2 in 215/75 ($250 each is good price yes?)

Bighorns do come smaller than that, I have them in a 235/75/15...
They should be able to get them in for you.

Call John and ask the questions, it's his job to know for sure.
$1000 for a set of 4 BFGs isn't too bad, but I've heard good things about Maxxis (as well as being impressed with my Treps) which are, as you've found, considerably cheaper.
