Hi all

i would like some more power in my 97 coil 1.3L sierra, it has a set of 30" maxxis bighorns on it. yet i have a budget of $1000 give or take.

i dont no if i should go for a
*different engine mayb?
*bolt some thing on to my stock 1.3(eg turbo?)
* or keep the 1.3 and change my gears

Is there any thing els that could do?

I'd be getting gears it will make the world of difference on and offroad though it won't be a power house it will be much more drivable

How long is a piece of string??? You have the right fuel tank, but you will also need:

-Adaptor kit
-Vit style in tank fuel pump
-Loom modification
-90 degree adaptor for dizzy
-Various hoses/lines etc

If your not handy with the tools this could easily cost in excess of $2-3k.

Gearing would be a cheaper alternative, but you have a coily so Tfer case swap is simple enough but again, you need a few things. Diff gears...not 100% if what you could do there

Even with a 1.6 the gearing will still be all wrong, and it'll still be nowhere near as good as properly geared with a 1.3!

For $500 you should be able to buy a 1.0L transfer case and fit it to your coily with the necessary mods and get a good gearing reduction to suit your 30's.

Use the other $500 to get some extractors and a 2" exhaust system and thats as good as you can get on your budget.

1.6L EFi swap will set you back $2-4K.

Don't discount a cam regrind best power mod I have done. Coupled with 2" exhaust is a nice combo. Regrind cost around $150 - $170.

Gears don't give you more power it changes your mechanical advantage giving the perception you have more power but they should be on your list.

Like most other responses 1.6 would be the way to go for power. Doing one at the moment cost around $2k but it can have it hassles too.

depends where you measure the power from. it does actually give you more power at the wheels...

Why go to all that hassle with spending 2-4K on conversion of a Sierra.Just go and buy a Vitara with a EFI 1.6 in it ready to go???

Anyway, a properly geared 1.3 Sierra will be a huge difference to 30s without gearing. It is definitely the way to go.

gearing X a bajiliant. you will spend allot more doing power up's then just doing a tcase swap and gearing...

yeah, thats what i meant, sorry, i should have been more specific. gearing fixes the problem created from having bigger tires. simple physics, torque = force x distance. you increase the distance (or diameter of the tyres) you also have to increase the torque. thats what lower gears do... it really depends on what sik97 is after. speed, or just a little more grunt...

Even with the extra power, it'll still be a dog without decent gearing...

Plus more power, big tyres and no gearing is not gonna be great on the clutch, or the rest of the driveline for that matter...

Just re gear it. Everyone i know that does power upgrades break heaps of stuff. Even tho my sierra was slow i never broke any driveline bits. No busted axles, t/case mounts, diffs or unis.

Hell if i was as hard on it with more grunt it would have died years ago.
