ok,done RUF,standard shackles have flipped. wondering the following:

1) how much longer are standard rear springs than standard fronts?
2) is a 2" extended shackle measured from bolt holes?
3)are the 40mm ome springs actually 40mm longer than standard rears or is that the supposed lift they are meant to deliver?

instead of moving front spring mounts i was going to move the rear springs backwards (rear - front = amount moved back) and the put in longer shackles to correct the angle.

1) My stock rears measured 1015 eye/eye, stock fronts 940 eye/eye, so 75mm longer. Both were somewhat shagged vs new original springs though so yours may vary.

2) 2" extended shackle is stock 70mm plus an extra 50mm (2") for a total length of 120mm (between bolt centres). You'll likely need 2" shackles if all you've done is redrill the rear mount point in the original hanger. I made up new hanger plates so could move the rear of the spring back a bit - that lets me run a 100mm shackle with good shackle angle. I've got some 2" shackles here that you can have for $50 if you want (need bolts though) ... but I'd honestly recommend you splash for some of Fatzook's TwinStick Offroad ones :)

3) 40mm OME springs deliver approx 40mm lift. They are about the same eye to eye. Mine were slightly shorter eye to eye than stock actually when not fitted - that could have been due to the original springs shagging out though and losing some of their elastic recovery.

More info from my dodgy RUF job here if it helps. Bottom of Page 1 / top of Page 2.

By the way you'd only want to move your rear hanger back HALF the difference in spring length and compensate for the other half at the front using longer shackles. Otherwise all the extra length will be on the back side of the diff meaning the diff will be nowhere near the centrepoint of the springs. Could be wrong but I doubt that's going to help spring life or performance.

If fabbing mounts up though (and by fabbing I mean welding, not a dodgy bolt jobby like mine) then I'd go for extending the front mounts. That way you get a bit of wheelbase extension as well as the longer, flexier spring. Moving rear mount won't give you that extra wheelbase length. Remember if making up new plates for the rear to drop the mount point slightly too to keep caster angle the same when you put the longer shackles on ;)

Another option is to put on rear carry springs.
They are shorter that sierra rears but longer than the fronts and will go straight in and not invert.

Full RUF is way better.

thanks moph, given me some ideas :D im doing a fabricating apprenticeship so will do pretty well all the metal work (shackles, spring mounts)myself :D
TSOR shackles are pretty damn nice though :D

ohhh, with the spring mounts they are for the rear,i want to make the rear spring shackle exactly as bad as the front then correct the bad angle with longer shackles :D

thanks again neo :) you were very very helpful on my last issue too, already have the rears in is all,now gotta fix the angles :D ideas for when my ex-rears are shagged though :D

thanks guys

Dont forget once you're done you will need to look at brake lines, front shaft length and shockies too (in that order).

And bumpstops fore/aft position.

thanks aaron and fatzook :) yeah will def need longer brake lines. already got vs commodore shocks on the front and hiace on the back so they should suffice for now.
il search forums for extending my bumpstops :) thanks fatzook i would have forgotten.
as for shaft length il be checking to see if it needs a spacer at all, failing that il get a custom jobby made up :D

thanks for the response guys :D

once you're done be sure to unbolt the shocks and flex it up anyway, just to check - you dont want to be using shockies as limiting straps =)

This is what i measured as well along the main leaf e-e. Is it also pretty much the exact same as the OME dakar rears. Hence for a lifted spring OME's are pretty short re:poor shackle angles

So if what you guys are saying is true about the OME springs being the same length e-e as standard rears, and mine now sits standard height at the front with standard rears in and 100mm shackles. Putting 2" lifted rears in the front of mine will lift it 2" and hence make it level with the rear, but with a longer spring in the front...

Yeah?

Yea from my measurements ome rears are the same length e-e as the stocko rears so yea this may just work for you.

But your shackle angle is still woeful!

mine too, horrible horrible angle!! i think i will settle for factory shackles, remount front and back of the hangars and maybe swicth the rears to EFS 65mm to make up the difference.

wont the extra arch in the spring reduce the amount the spring lays flat and the amount it sticks out, therefore reducing shackle angle?

it would until you compressed the leaf... then the shackle will invert and potentially bend the spring. Also, the front weighs more than the rear, and the rear are a lower rate than the fronts, so it would sag more in the front than it would in the rear.
