Just bought my 2005 RWC Jimny - it veered to the left and wobbled. Tyres are brand new - had an alignment done and now drives straight. The WOBBLE is bad news. I had another driver stare at the front end and shake his head as the Jimny stepped into a really bad wobble. It happens between 75-80klms - I can count on it and safety is a worrying factor !!!

I get the wobble at 70 to 80 kph.
It only started when i put the RTC on.
I was told by the guy OL Mandurah, that putting the RTC on 4wd with a 3" or higher lift will cause this to happen.
Is this true?
I have had a alignment done and no change. I will disconnect the damper next week and see if it goes away.

Probably if you went to him with a wobble and no RTC he'd suggest putting one on.

Smiffkid kid has the same set up with no wobble.
My jimny is still under warranty but i don't think they would touch it with all the mods it has now.

Howdy all,
My story is the same as above, stock tyres, stock suspension, no mods and wobbles start at 70kms and disappear around 80kms.
Fitted 60mm lift with caster correction in front and rear along with RTC damper and wobbles gone...
Cheers, just adding to the mix...

Same with mine. I have never had a car that has its wheels balanced as much. Don't know if the Coopers wear pattern causes it.

Seems the slightest change can upset things. Mine is really good at the moment, but is set off at the moment by the warped rotors.

I think the tread pattern is definitely often part of the cause

interesting that coopers have been mentioned. i used to get really bad cases of the wobbles every single time i went over about 75-80 when i had a/t coopers on, despite the numerous checks, alignments and balances, but the minute i changed over to dunlops, it disappeared completely and hasn't come back since.
and when i say the wobbles, i mean the whole car acting like it was having some kind of seizure and feeling like it was about to shake apart, and they wouldn't settle down at all until i slowed right down and pulled over.

No, mine is nothing like that. Just a bit of shake in the steering wheel around the 70-80km range and a lot of times I don't really notice it but when I do then I get the front wheels balanced. With the Coopers I meant that the way they were wearing down caused the wheel balance to be upset easily. This happened more when the tyres were new but now that they have hardened up and slowed right down in the way they wear they don't require a balance as much. The rims don't seem to need to be out by much for it to be felt thru the steering.

Taking my car to Peddlers tomorrow so they can check the preload on the king pins. You blokes have put a curse on me. I got my first real shake yesterday. I was going up a hill in a 70km zone (I sit on 75 due to the speedo difference) and hit a rough patch on the road and got the shakes. Try later on to get it back but could not, only a slight one but decided to start doing something about it.

That's how it starts. Sorry to hear you've got it but no surprise.

When I spoke to Peddlers he said he had not heard of that problem with Suzuki but is was common with Nissans and a few toyotas and with the Nissans because they had done so many they can usually sort it out real quick by preloading the king pins. Booked in for tomorrow so hopefully they can fix it before it gets to be a problem.

Maybe, but I will give it a go. Is there any reason why it only happens around the 75km mark? Seems funny that it isn't more broad across speed range.

In most cars its a harmonic thing. The vibrations reach a particular frequency which is perfect for causing the death wobbles. Given that there are so many potential causes/ variables for the wobbles, it is at different speeds for everyone.

Don't know if it is true but a Suzuki dealership owner told me Suzuki will stop making the Jimnys soon and no replacement. Either that or he meant that they won't be bringing them to Australia any more. Any one got some good contacts to find out?

I sent Suzuki Queensland an email yesterday about the frequency of the problem, don't expect an answer but looking forward to being surprised. I don't think Suzuki would axe the solid axle Jimny as worldwide they are way too popular. The option of not bringing them to Aus is a lot more believable. Aussies turned their noses up at the Jimny for a long time which has got to make the importers think twice about continuing to bring them in. Now that the Jimny is becoming more popular maybe they'll rethink it, although the wobble issues would also put a negative spin on the Jimny in their eyes.
The axle isn't the problem. The main cause seems to stem from the front control arms pointing towards the direction of travel. They have to fight a lot of side-to-side forces and the only thing that ties it to where its' correct position is the Panhard Rod. To fix the problem everything has to be as perfect as possible. I made new panhard bushes that are an extremely tight fit against the faces of the mounts which seems to have solved it in conjunction with preload on the King Pins, Steering Dampener and well balanced wheels and tyres.
