Autos are as crude as welded, and no better for onroad use.

If yu drive on the blacktop you will regret not getting an airlocker.

Don't know why auto lockers cop so much shit? Mine has been in for four months now and it's still awesome I think the trick is just to get them set up right in the first place.

Auto lockers are unpredictable and uncontrollable. If they lock up unexpectedly, who knows what might happen... Maybe even lose your car for a month hey Mick?

Id take a welded diff over an auto locker anyday.. The welded diff in my volvo was easy to drive with, alot more predictable in the wet... And much cheaper. Also alot less noisy, other then the tyre scrubbing on the welded you couldnt here shit.. My autolocker bangs, clicks and pops all the time.

my auto locker never gives me any trouble. It works well in the bush and on the road the only thing i notice is the occasional sound as it disengages on a corner.

I have had a spool before in another car. It wears tyres very quickly, attracts unwanted attention when performing u-turns and parking, also breaks axles.

Although I loved my welded rear in my Sierra,
I'm liking the fact that my rear tyres are lasting a lot longer,
with an auto locker in my Vit.
I'd still weld a light narrow cars rear, but the vit is too wide and heavy, I think it would break stuff.

Ive had a welded rear for years in my lwb. Never had a problem. When it was removed I couldn't tell the difference in driving, likewise when I put it back in.

The lockright front is a pain in the ass though, if you corner under brakes (ie: pulling into a driveway while slowing down) it will lock causing the steering to get heavy). It's also noisy as hell.
