Hey guys,

Looking at getting some rims off low range but I'm after a decent offset and they have "backspace". Does anyone know what "backspace" is? I've never heard of it before.

its the measurement from the mounting surface to the inside egde of the wheel. kinda like rim offset but different

The more backspace a rim has, the greater its positive offset. ( or lesser negative offset )

Fatzook has understood what I've said. So if the rim is an 8" wide rim with a backspace of 4" that theoretically means there is 100mm of negative offset? just trying to work the maths.

No. Offset is measured from the centre of the rim.

So a 8" rim with 4" backspace has a 0 offset

Sorry bluesuzy didnt quiet understand the full way it worked. I'll do some working out to see exactly what backspace I need to get

So you understand that Offset is measured from the centre of the rim? So positive offset will move the wheel centre out, which inturn locates the wheel further under the car. Negative is ofcoarse the opposite, making the wheel stick out from the wheel arch.

Backspace is just another way of measuring offset.

Backspace is also a "simple" way (aka Dumb) to know what rims will not foul on chassis components for a particular vehicle. eg if your stock rims have 3 1/2 inches of backspace and do not hit the chassis, springs or steering components, then an 8" rim with 3 1/2" of backspace will also clear, or a 10" rim, etc.

It is a dumb way because it does not take into account fouling bodywork or bumpers, or the clearance issues of taller or wider tyres, or the effect of offset on camber and caster.
