Hey guys i went out 4x4ing this weekend up in lithgow and ran into a few problems of problems. ive got a 96 coily sierra. It was my first trip out in it since finishing a few mods. Ive done 30inch tires and 2inch body lift and 40mm suspension lift. standard motor and no reduction gearing
First problem was after driving thru a puddle only a few meters long the engine started to run like shit. It wouldn't idle and it would only keep running if i was pumping the accelerator. It was also spluttering and running really rough.
I gathered it might have had some water in the engine, however the airbox was dry when i checked it. Does this sound like it had water in the engine? after i changed the oil and filter in the engine it was running fine for the next few hours.
then when i started to climb a few steep hills it did the same thing. does driving up steep hill cause problems like this?
Also as i was leaving the forest, the radiator fan and pulley snapped off the shaft that goes into the engine. A nyone know what could have caused this? is this a common problem with sierras?
maybe time for a gti or vitara engine conversion

1 Sounds like a spark issue or carb. Did water hit the dizzy or get in it? It will do the same if your leads are shit too.
2. Carbies can play up bouncing around. Again could be spark/dizzy issue
3. WTF. Very not common, sounds like you were unlucky. Sierra solid plastic fans do NOT like water or mud. They will smash.
4. Did you stop in Richmond?? White coily, white rims. I may of passed you in my sub outback..

yeh mate that was me on the side of the road overheating. so much trouble getting back home without the fan going. just glad that i made it back
the actual metal shaft was the part that snapped.
i tired to play around with the leads to see if that changed the engine performance but it didnt. it just seems funny that changing the oil and filter after driving thru that puddle it was fixed... until i started to drive up hills

Could of blown the gasket.
I was checking your coily out to see if was my mates ages ago, but he had checkerplate bling corners. I went past with a swb hardtop in my trailer, thought u would of spotted it Thought you were just getting stuff out the back of your car.

My coily has done this after deep water and steep hills and high altitude. It stalled and only ran with my foot on the pedal. After doing the backfiring carby trick it never happened again.

When you drive through water, the fan suddenly becomes a propeller... It wasn't designed to take that sort of load, so it may well lead to a failure of the fan/pulley...

whats the back firing carbie trick?
i just went out to the garage and checked the oil from the dipstick and it seems ok. there was a small puddle of oil on the floor tho, and ive only been home a few hours
yeh i was putting my fibre glass roof back on. i didnt see you dude, i was pretty stressed out from the drive home and wasnt taking much notice of what was going on around me. all i wanted to do was get the car home.

im not a 100 percent sure on the backfire technic but i think it has something to do with swaping the leads over just move number 1 ta 2 and 2 ta one without changing them on the dizzy

Yeh thats it, give it a few pumps and the carb should back fire, this blows some built up crap off the idle sensor.

There is no idle sensor
Making the motor backfire up through the intake helps ""blow" the shit that is blocking the jets out of the jets, often back into the float bowl where it can get back into the system at a later date. Don't get me wrong its a good method if you are stuck and need a band aid fix to get it going again, but it isnt a proper cure. Basically by swaping the leads you are making the petrol/air mixture combust when the intake valve is still open. Usually swapping 2 and 3 gives a good effect.

Ok sweet that's something good to know I took the car to a mechanics that I'm mates with. He thinks that the water pump seized which is why the fan broke off. Also why it is causing the engine to run like shit because the warm water isn't circulating to the automatic choke or something

Choke is only for a cold engine. If it is stuck on, it can run rich, and it will get very fumey. Did it smell different when driving?

There are two methods you can try with the carby before you pull it apart.
1. Backfire as mentioned above
2. Smother the carby with a rag, give it a bit of throttle and removing the rag.
I believe the second method works from the sudden increase in the volume of air which sucks the offending gunk out. Little trick I learnt from Want33s.

Is there a way of cleaning it out with out having to pull down the carby? Force a back fire by crossing the ignition leads on cylinders 2 & 3 perhaps? That should do it or start engine and rev hard, then (while still at full throttle) smother carby with a rag until it nearly dies. Repeat 2 or 3 times... Should pull offending article through. If above doesn't work, remove carby and take out the idle jet and run a piece of wire through it.
