It could just be that I've never noticed it before. I've heard people debating fuel economy in autos and some people say they save fuel by putting them in N. Not to start that debate, but the torque converter can't have much load on it if the car rolls backwards!

I'm wondering if newer autos are designed to have less resitance at idle, and possible roll back is a result. I'm also concerned the torque converter could be worn, the car has done 80,000K's

To tell the truth I've never noticed them having roll back & they don't switch N, if you bring the rev's to 1k does it hold???

Torque converter is designed to have little or no effect at idle speed.
Rolling backwards down a hill while in D is perfectly normal.

I haven't checked what it's iding at but it sounds "nomal". I'll check tomorrow.

It will definately hold if I use a tiny bit of throttle.

I just spoke to my old man and a mate and they said their auto corolla and falcon do the same thing. I'm going to assume it's normal.

As I said, never owned an auto before and I've probably never paid much attention in rentals.

steak_knife, I didn't write it clearly, but I meant that people manually shifted into N thinking they will save fuel. It doesn't seem worth the effort to me.

when i roll backwards in my auto it stalls or when off road and get wheel spin and back off it stalls what would cause this? I was told it had upgraded bands.

Even holding the revs at 3000rpm for a few seconds in nuetral/park and let the throttle go it almost stalls

Some/most Euro shit box's will select 2nd or N if foot on the brake & no speed sig, so some do..

I have stalled an auto by doing a 180'spin with an accord..

High stall torque converter???

Just takes higher revs for the converter to fully stall. Standard cars are around 1000rpm from memory.
