i got a weird problem when i have a full tank of fuel the fuel gauge reads empty but as i use the fuel the gauge rises till it gets to half way then it starts going down again. has anyone else had this problem? what could be causing it?

hmmmmm sounds like u bought my old sierra lol it had exactly the same problem and i never figured out what caused it.,........i just went off the odometer until the fuel guage started to come back up to half

yhe man i think itsa common problem, it happens to mine as well... always keep a jeery can at all times.. well on big drives anyways..

I've got it too. Its wear and tear to the fuel sender in the tank. Pinball did a write on of it on point and shoot. Basically the little wiper bar that determines the resistance through the sender moves away from the coil as the tank gets more fuel in it. Eventually (around halfway on mine) the resistance goes to infinite which makes the guage hit rock bottom. In his write up eh ahd pics showing how he jsut bent the wiper back and all was well. This happened to mine as soon as i pulled out the old sender to put into my coily tank!!

When full it reads empty. When prob 1/4 left it raises to 1/4 then runs out before shes empty!! Bit missleading..I have to go by kms. And a jerrycan. Need a fix!

+1 here but mine goes PAST the empty mark when i fill it, then around 1/4 of a tank it goes to the Top of the E, from there i know iv got about 110 odd kays till she is dry.

my 1 litre was strange up high from gunge on the sender, lifted it out and gave it a blast with carby cleaner

I think it comes from lack of use due to previous owners never filling them up

so its definatly not the gauge then? if i just replace the sender it should fix it?

jsut clean the wiper surface and arm and make sure it contacts well, no need to replace it jsut yet

Mike, its pretty easy to check. When the guage is not showing anything check the resistance across the wire to your sender. If it's infinite or at least not very close to the values in the pic above then its at the sender end. If you were to replace the sender with one from the wrecker make sure you test the sender resistance across the range. But who's to say that the same problem wont crop up in 2 months. You may as well try to fix yours. Unless of course your a millionare and are happy to put off refueling the lear jet for a week to buy a new OME sender. I might pull mine out on the weekend and take some pics if anyone is interested.

i had an 84 1 liter with this problem, and just bought an 89 soft top with the same problem. i'll look in to fixing it now i know its a common problem & something i can fix myself (maybe)
