does any one know the lenght of a t50 gearbox?
i've been playing trying towork out what engine i'm going to use. i have a piazza engine sort of sitting in the engine bay of my sierra but the gearbox lenght means i'll have to move the xfer back and maybe do a body lift, don't want to do as its going spoa.
if the t50 is shorter i'll sell the piazza and buy a 4age and t50 if i don't have to move the xfer (less work) but if i do i'll stick with the piazza as its a 2 ltr turbo and i have it.
or is there a adapter that will let me bolt up a sierra 5 speed to one of these engines? the piazza is the same gear box and engine mounts as a gemini petrol engine.

i could be wrong here but im pretty sure when my mate had a 1 litre zook with a 4age and a t50 box the transfer had to be pushed back, and driveshafts modified.im sure that was all involved on his engineers report
anyone else??

don't quote me on it but my A41 3 spd auto which i'm bolting to my 4age is 720mm long and we measured a t50 at the same time and it was 30mm longer/ 750mm. I'm getting a custom jackshaft made up at the moment. Its only going to be 200mm long with transfer in stock position. short but will work out ok when the transfer is lifted around 50mm to get a perfect horizontal connection with the auto.

AE71 corolla. 1984ish model. 3spd cable operated. I wanted minimal electrics. I don't even knwo if you can get a rwd electronic auto for these engines. THe beautiful thing is that my 20v came with an additional factory attachment on the throttle for a cable operated auto even though the models that the 20v came with were all electronic afaik.
Currently I've got 4.9 Trail tough transfer gears, and 4.57 yukon diff gears. with the A41 auto (Aisin-Warner) from my reseach it seems like its a 1:1 final drive which gives me around 4600rpm at 100km/h. I can drop back down to 3.7s in the diffs as I have them still but I'll see how annoying it is. I should have a solid crawl ratio up in the 100:1's.
On 31s , I reckon you could get away with a 1 litre transfer and 3.9s and the auto...would be ok. I'm on 34s. Be careful with Rachet style shifters. For offroading you need to be able to hit reverse quickly. With a rachet style shifter you don't want to be bashing through gears to find reverse onlly to go past into park. bad if you're about to go over and need to reverse. Stick to detent style cable operated shifter. A bar style connection between shifter and auto will posibly be knocked from big hits on the car and knock car outta gear. Cable will flex a little.

also remember when going auto that the torque converters usually run at around 2-2.5:1 so an effective crawl ratio in a manual will be doubled for an auto...eg when I was 5 speed and G13 I was 3.65 x 4.9 x 4.57 = 81.73:1 (awesome for steep off road crawling work). times that by 2 and you get 160ish:1 which is pretty sweet for crawling work.
Due ot only being a 3 spd my first is more likely to lower than 3.65, around 3 maybe I'm not sure. If anyone can find the ratios for an aisin warner A41 that would be great!

thanks for the details on the auto. never thought about grabbing reverse quickly with the shifter.
i'll end up runnig about the same size wheels as you but don't like the idea of reving the engine that high (can't change the diff gears as i'm going 60's diffs and are about 4.1 i think) so the auto thing might be dead for me and i'll just get some 6.5 x fer gears.
thanks for your help any way.

how about autos out of taragos? I think they had a stumpier extension housing but the 4 speed ones are electric (only convertor lock I think)

early ones had 4A somethings I am pretty sure
hmm actually they might of been 4Y so wont be any good, thought you might be able to adapt it if they use the same transmission
convertor lockup with a switch on the dash would be pretty cool
