hello.

bought a 92 sierra that was drowned for $1000 and was told motor is still fine, but its dead.

have found a 1.6 out of a vitara (i assume) with gearbox/transfer case in one and attatched to the motor. can buy motor on its own no gearbox.

just wondering if i can use the gearbox with the transfer case in one with my stock W/T drive shafts or would it be better to run my 1.3 gearbox with a lowrange adaptor plate?

custom fab for the crossmembers is not an issue.

and can i use the 1.6 clutch with the 1.3 gearbox if i have to retain it?

thankyou in advance!

lumpy. :D

Hi Lump,

Is the 1.6 a carby or EFI?

You can fit the vit engine and gearbox, but lose the transfercase. You will need to flare the tranny tunnel slightly to fit the vit box, and make a new x-member. You will need to shorten the jackshaft too. The sierra transfer will stay where it is.

All this means no adaptor plates, or weak 1.3 gearbox, or sierra clutches etc.

If you keep the 1.3 gearbox you will need to use the 1.3 clutch and flywheel.

Peter

well, thats waht i thought but when i was looking at the engine (it still had the gearbox attatched) the gearbox and transfer case was one peice. similar to the likes of patrol etc.
if it was a seprate gearbox and transfer i would be fitting it now :P

also, its a efi 16v motor. was told they are wrecking a sierra. but as far as my knowledge there wasnt a sierra that came out with a 1.6?

any chance some one has a 1.6 gearbox available to sell? seprate for use with my 92 transfer case? a stronger box sounds good.

thanks

It is a one piece unit, but it can be separated. Transfer bolts onto gearbox I think.

ok awsome. so what do i do once the transfer case is separated from the gearbox so i can use it as a normal gearbox?

(as in where the jackshaft goes?)

or doesnt it work like that? i need it to run like the normal 1.3 separate gearbox does.

thanks.

i can get the gearbox when i get the motor.
the only thing i dont understand is once i unbolt the transfer case will the jack shaft just go into whats left of the gearbox?
or is there something else i have to do to it before i can use it?

how much for the gearbox you offered shane? is it the same style of box as the one im talking about? or one like the 1.3 with a seprate transfer case?

Here is a link to my setup. 1.6 vit box. You can just see the jackshaft.

I don't have a pic on hand but if you split the gearbox and transfercase appart, you can see that both are sealed and there is an extension chamber built into the transfercase. The back of the gearbox has a seal for the jackshaft to slip into. No further work is required.

Fair enough.
Im not to sure on that, as ive never taken a Transfercase off and had a look. But it can be done, may just have to get different fittings for the jack shaft and get it resized.
Yeah its got the tansfercase bolted to it. Probabyl about $200-$250 for it.

ahh so, once the transfer case is removed there will be a shaft sticking out that the jack shaft goes on, and you just leave the box looking like that? with where the transfer case goes on just bare?

that makes sence to me now. sorry for the head fk over this.. this is first time dealing with 4wd's and that..

im into imports.

thanks alot for your help.

but some pics would be good so i know what il doing.

whats the clearance like with the sump? no body lift no spring lift, just some extended shackles.

will do body lift if needed.

Since we're on the topic of gear vit gear boxes, what's the gear ratio like on those 5 speeds? Is it close to a Sierra's or different?

I would be nice to have a higher 5th gear for the freeway here.

bummer, was hoping for a different ratio or two. I just picked up a 5:14 case to replace my 4:1. It's bit lower in hi range, but the low is going to be nice.

The problem is I am as low as I want to go in high already, so even a little lower is too much there. Maye I'll go back to the stock 3:73's if it's too much.

I have a vit 5 speed and case I was going to make into a kicker3 one of these days. So that's why I was askin' about the ratios. Was hoping for a high 5th :?

Oh well at least it's a bit more stout of a transmission

As far as I can see thats one of the only 2 benifits. The other being a larger clutch.

& flying wheel, not an advantage, cause it doesn't spin up as quick..

does it always idle at 1500rpm or does it come down after a few minutes?

No.

A lighter flywheel will allow the motor to rev quicker. It also allows it to wash off speed quicker. In a 4wd thats not a great thing. For example if you are trying to scale a rock, the revs will drop faster as you push up against it with a lighter flywheel, increasing the chances of stalling. A heavy flywheel has more rotational mass, and is harder to slow down. So the same rock then becomes less of an obstacle for the motor.

Yeah I had to play with my idle speed. Seemed to fix my problem so I didn't look any further :?

pretty sure there's a big bolt with a flat head top on the throttle body housing somewhere that you adjust
