Hi Again ,

I thought I would start a new topic instead of adding it to my other problem.

I always though that my clutch was hard when engaging, making a thump noise sometimes. I've since worked out that it is actually my leaf springs and diff head/driveshaft moving when taking off. Is this normal for a samurai/sierra/sj41x ?

When i say moving, if i pop my head out of the car whilst taking off - not the smartest thing to do i know - and have a look under the car the leaf spring moves up (compressing?), and so does the diff head and drive shaft. The diff and drive shaft look like they are being pushed together and where the join the move up. I hope this makes sense, if not i'll try and get a video of it.

could be.....Didn't know what that was till you replied. From what little research i have done already it seems that it's more of a problem on modified (raised) vehicles? mine is completely stock standard. But it does fit the bill.

EDIT: sorry if this sounds stupid, but since my vehicle isn't modded, could axle wrap be caused by my springs just being worn and getting weak/soft over time? If so, solution being to reset them?

Hell why stop there! why not do an Indiana Jones dive off the bonnet and slide right under with a handful of spanners while on the go? Just wedge a broom on the accelerator and another through the steering wheel and out the window. Oh and keep filming during the interview with the cops too!

Oh and to answer: a little movement is normal, "clunks" are not. Check all the suspensions bushes and the diff U bolts too while you have the spanners out while under it at speed.

check your u-bolts and shackles and make sure nothings loose... unless you're SPOA and running less leaves its unlikely to be spring wrap... that and spring wrap almost always maxes out the rear unis giving a severe vibration/shudder through the whole car.

well I went to double check the ubolts and i noticed a leak between the u-joint and the diffhead. Looks like i've got a pinion seal to replace now as well

does the pinion move in and out? Or up and down?

I had a quick check now. I didn' feel any movement, but that was after a quick check. What are you thinking? Heres some photos i just took:

This is fresh. It was like this a couple of says ago. The old girl got some bumping around a few days ago while getting some firewood, so I'm just wondering if it took a few to many knocks

How much play is there when you try and drive. Out of gear. How much can you turn the diff centre flange before it wants to 'drive'

Turning the diff centre flange from hard lock to hard lock - free movement that I think your talking about? - there is 10 - 15mm of movement.

ok guys, I though I would add a video of the movement in the diff flange and also movement on the universal joint. Now I'm obviously no grease monkey etc, but i do tinker with my vehicles so I've no problems doing things, it's just about getting the right bit of advice/knowledge. I think the universal joint is buggered because of the play in it? all the other joints have no play. Does this sound right?

Also the play from turning the diff flange is about 10 - 15mm as stated above. Is this normal?

The universal is stuffed plus you have a leaking pinion seal.

I'll get the Chilton manual out and have a look at how easy or difficult the pinion seal will be to do. Hopefully it wont be too cheap. Would the movement in the universal joint be a factor in my original post in this thread?

the universal joint IS the reason for your original post in this thread. because your universal joint is stuffed, it was binding up and causing axle wrap. it has also created your other problem (pinion seal leak).

thanks Colin awesome well not awesome but at least i know the problem and it's not expensive to fix. $17 for pinion seal, $45 for universal joint and then just some new oil. I hear people put LSD oil in there zuk diffs if they wine abit. What do you guys think?

Nulon G70 driveline oi additive works quite well at shutting up noisy diffs.

Though depending on the noise it may or may not work. Reembmer the whine usually indicates a problem in the diff.

Well, I'm a total meathead!

I couldn't get the pinion nut off whatsoever so I had to get firestones fleet truck so I could use there rattle gun. I was in such a rush that I never checked weather the gun was in forward or reverse. Nut wouldn't come off. Guy asks have I got in in the right gear dumbass! it wasn't. hoping i hadn't crushed the crush tube i changed the seal and put it all back together. Slightly off the ground i started the beast up and it nearly stalled when i put it in gear. WTF??? I tried again but with a few more revs and it was really stiff so i assume it has some drag looks like the tube is well and truly crushed amateur day I guess it's back to square one but more intense. How hard a job is it to put a new crush tube in? pull axles out, diffhead, change tube and bearings and away i go? I have had a quick read through the manual but it doesn't focus to much on this particular job.

just get another diff, pulling apart a diff is best left up to the experts....

sweet, I'll try and track one down. Otherwise I got a mechanic to give me a ball park figure of how much it would cost to get done and it was around $2 - $300 in labour plus parts. Not worth it really.
