all my recover equipment is for a patrol so there is virtually no stretch when using the snatch strap on a zuk! apparently you need at least 10% stretch for a strap to work properly what rating is everyone using

Wont ever need it now Ya have a Zuk cos ya wont get stuck
But if ya need to snatch a heavier stuck truck, you still need the higher rating anyway.

I have the same I think. Works well with the zook and plenty strong enough.

Well not really, you will still only be able to exert the same amount of force, whether it's a zook or patrol. The strap should be sized to the car doing the recovering.

I don't know enough about engineering, physics,
load ratings or safety to present any sensible arguments.
Trying to snatch a 2 ton car with a 1 ton strap.
Just don't sound right to me.
But it could be

The snatch should deffinately be the size of the car doing the recovery to avoid damage to it also.. eg tearing off a recovery point and killing someone, happened a month ago in hervey bay.

Makes more sense put that way.
But I was assuming load rating was prevention of breaking the strap,
not functionality of the strap.
More stretch would help in recovery, but hopefuly not add to risk of strap breaking.
Not enough stretch would certainly risk breaking bits off cars

when do you really get stuck enough to need a snatch strap as opposed to just a towing strap??? i can understand a GV or something needing one being heavier, but a SWB sierra or vitara?
i've only owned towing straps - and even when stuck to my chassis in mud a stock standard jimny in 1st low has pulled me out without hassle.
as for the length - mines a 6m strap with high load rating (i think its 6ton?)

i have a 12000lb an 8000lb and an 9000lb, all used to recover others not my self, but 8000lb is plenty enough for a zook

ouch!
we do alot of recoverys... being in swamps etc... i have had to back up till my rear bar was touching the bull bar of a 80 and go for gold on a 12mtr strap.... buy christ that hurt! but it was the only option at the time. we have also used winch extension straps with snatchys, its fine aslong as u have a snatchy in there...

We also do a few recoveries as I wheel with a stock jeep wrangler 4 door. I use my ARB 9000kg snatch. Works a treat. Last weekend the jeep diff dragged in a bog for a good 15m and had water over the sills. I had to snatch quick as he was worried about water damage. The recovery path was short and I had to double back on my 9m strap... Bad idea. After nearly going through the front windscreen I realize they loose their SNATCH ability

I've got a 9m 8000kg strap. It's from ebay so not sure how trust worthy it is, but i've rescued a few crusiers with and it seems to do the job. Plus I've got a 20m winch extension strap (i've only got a 4000kg rated hand winch) and a 3m tree protector that I hope I'll never have to use.

to put it easy for u .. when a zook get stuck its usaly really really stuck .. so there for carry a nice beffy snach strap 8000 should be fine just like allien said u dont want the other car to brake it or pull recovery points off .. ..
snach straps are cheap as chips well from supercrap walk in and pick up a big one for 60 bucks and it will last u ages dont bother un wraping it ..
unless u do really stupid stuff with a zook u really will rarely get
stuck ..

If its that old that its changed colour, its time to throw it out, they dont last forever... recommended they can be safely be used for 10 to 15 recoveries, 20 max, then they need to be replaced...

It's meant to stretch. If it doesn't it's over rated. If it doesn't feel elastic when you snatch it's over rated. If when it takes up the slack and pulls taught you feel like you're tied to a tree with a steel cable... Guess what, it's over rated.
The whole idea is that the elasticity is what will pull the stuck vehicle out, your momentum is just to stretch the strap as far as possible. A light weight Zuke won't stretch a heavy rated strap.
a broken strap is not near as dangerous as a recoiling strap flying through the air with a recovery point attached to it.

I think the color loss is from washing it.
Hasn't been used too often,
but think I will replace it, just in case

That makes sense, safer to break a strap, than break bits of the car.
Will stick to my method, lower rating strap, and don't offer to snatch heavy stuck cars.
I imagine elasticity differs between makes of strap, too.
So sticking with a reputable strap maker is probably wise.

ARB 9000kg $88. Snatch load rating is fine for pulling zooks, jeeps or your mates brand new Nivara out. The 9000kg 9m strap I had stretch well over 2 metres when pulling out a patrol.
Ps. Never snatch from a dodgy recovery point. Recover hooks scare me!

It is interesting no-one has mentioned yet that the strap should be rated to 2-3 times the GVM of the LIGHTER vehicle of the 2 in the recovery. Therefore no matter what you are recovering - if you are in a Suzuki and snatching or being snatched then you are best off with a lightly rated strap. 4500kg is ideal and about the heaviest snatch recommended for some Suzukis. Doesn't anyone ever read the mandatory safety instructions packaged with snatch straps nowadays?
