I am looking at fitting a turbo to my 1.3 motor but not sure where to start.
If anyone has done on e before could they let me know who to go about it.

Have you had experience with turbos at all? Getting it to work on a carby motor is very hard you are better off with efi and the right ecu setup tuned properly. You can only run low boost in the 1.3's aswell

we had a trubo 1.3 we ran 3psi it went verry well till we fried it in the 1 day. its a bit of a dog to set up luckerly my sisters boyfriend was doing it coz he has had alot to do with turbos and had it sorted pritty well. after that we put a gti 1.3 in it, it doesnt have as much power but it still quick

You would be better off running a efi setup on it.
But it can be done withe great results. Pm me if you really want to know it's going to cost you a fair bit if you go carby or efi

Wow. You turned a 70hp motor into a motor running a bit more than 100hp and it blew up in a day. Your sister's boyfriend might know turbos, but he doesn't seem to know much about tuning.
reece, from your posts is sounds like you really want a GQ comp car. They're pretty expensive to build, and building something like one out of a sierra will be nearly as expensive.
I'm not aware of anyone, anywhere in the world that has turbocharged a carby 1.3 and had it last any amount of time (like over a year... or months) Sometimes they last 1 day.
You might have more luck with an EFI motor like a G13BB or a G16B, but there will be lots of money in dyno time. Figure on about $2-3K in parts and about the same in troubleshooting and tuning- and that's assuming you have a motor in very good condition.
I think it's been said before that it's about a $6K job to expect any reliability.
Do a search on the turbo cars that have been built and you'll find most of them "need some more time on the dyno" or "need to sort the cold start" or "need to work on the mapping when it's off boost." That's code for "I've run out of money to spend on the dyno"
The reason I say I think you want a GQ comp car is that you've asked an odd question - you want to fit a turbo - not "I need more power" I'm guessing that means you want the sound and theatrics of a turbo, rather than a particular power or torque characteristic.
Do you even have a running car? How close to your finished setup are you running? how do you know you need a turbo? Most people thing G16B's provide enough power (about 90-95hp) Sort your gearing, your tyre size, and then figure out how much money to tip into the motor.
A tip though - fitting a motor with the right power output from the start will be cheaper and more reliable than turboing an inadequate motor to provide enough performance.
PS you mentioned a commodore V6 in another post. Don't do that again.

no it was a stock 1.3l sierra engine that peformed pritty good till it gave out
then we stuck a gti engin in her

If you want a turbo or SC get a ca18det or 4agze
That way you can
1/ run it in stock form
2/ have some hope of getting it legal
3/ should have reliability because the factory did the tuning for you!
Face it! G13a + turbo will be loads of time and money to get half the performance that the above motors would give you from factory.

As silly as it sounds (just suggesting because I've never been a fan of turbo) wouldn't it be easier to use a supercharger?
I'm sure I read somewhere you can mount them (if you can get a manifold happening) as a suck through (the carby) and then your carby doesn't need to be messed with because it's working with uncompressed air so it doesn't get the ratio's all screwed up?
I'd imagine it's nearly impossible to make a manifold to fit one though? Also getting a charger that would only provide a couple of pounds of boost might be an issue?

That is a very generalised statement.
Turbo and S/chargers both have their share of technical issues to overcome. In any case, with a carburetted forced induction motor, your choice in carby is critical to the systems success. It is not as simple as placing the SC after the carby. Both blow through and draw through setups have issues, some due to pressurising the carby, but mostly because you are compounding the issues that the carby had prior to forced induction.
IMO unless you have heaps of experience tuning carby's, or heaps of spare motors, you should leave turbo carby motors alone.
EFI is much more reliable and predictable.

This is what I thought, just asking as I'd read something somewhere about it working (probably a dodgy post) I'm not going to be doing forced induction with a carby that's for sure.
I won't be doing forced induction on anything anytime soon if ever, I don't want to blow up my engine! If I want 100kw I'll do a 4age conversion. Right now I'm happy with my new (to me) 1.3!

My experience with carbys in general is that they are hard to keep in tune, require constant work, have lots of mechanical linkages etc that can jam/ wear/ fail, and are just old tech. Throwing boost through them tends to dramatise these issues, making for a very unreliable fuel system.
EFI, although dearer to setup properly, is far more predictable, and reliable. You can tune your motor with a certain amount of safety, and end up with a good gain and low risk. It doesn't have to cost the world, but few people have the skill to do the whole job themselves, and thats were it starts costing money.
But you are right in saying that fitting a different motor that has your target power, straight out of the box, is a much better idea. Factory tune and components usually mean factory reliability. Doesn't get better than that.

I would love to have a play with a boosted carb setup. Sounds like an awesome challange!!

I once had a Datsun 1200 ute with A14 stroked and a air research T04 strapped to it. I ran a suck through set up. Using a 2 1/2" SU carbie. It worked awesome. Until idle. Cause the amount of fuel they need at boost a 6000 rpm, I needed a electric fuel pump. But then you have issues with the pump over powering the float and flooding the dam thing.
By the way it was a side bowl SU. And a 1.5 to 3 psi reg and this still didn't fix it.
So if anything go EFI. So many more options

yeah i have sceen a zook running a et pulsar turbo with a SU on the front of it... and it worked well.. its from devonport... a LONG time ago.. he was a mechanic and spent a few nights on the dyno getting it to run right.. but it worked well i have no idea on specs tho!
speak to rhett on outlermits he runs turbo with mazda 121 injection on g13a.

My mates been running for years a s12 on a g16a with single point injection.
It has a extra injector that is controlled from it's own programable controller and a wide band u2 sensor to keep a eye on af ratio.
It's his daily driver and runs great.
Best thing is that u can turn it on and off.
Because the standard computer is still there it does the job of fine tuning it so it runs like factory.
