Given that information, perhaps you should have someone look over your next candidate for purchase.

Where are you located?

I'm on North shore sydney. These seem to be hard to find in stock good condition in my budget though.
The crunch & grinding noises of the gearbox im not sure is normal on a 4WD gearbox

Sierras are seriously easy to fix. The gearbox's aren't the most spectacular to drive with but they shouldn't crunch unless you are shifting poorly, or its damaged. But they can be rebuilt fairly cheap, or even buy a second hand unit for even less. just make sure you have someone who is familiar with 4wds look over it before you swap cash for car, as there are alot of extra things that can go wrong. Having someone familiar with sierras look at it would be even better.

Its probably my poor shifting, as i havent driven a manual in awhile.

maybe i'll be looking at an older one, say an 80s model. The 90s ones are fetching very high prices and it looks like that one for 1500-2000 was a steal. Im so bummed about missing it!

How about this one?

http://cgi.ebay.com.au/Suzuki-Sierra-19 ... 644wt_1139

He's probably asking abit much for the repairs needed, but it comes with some goodies thrown in
