I have removed the plastic crap, but how do you guys remove the bracket.
I have a feeling the grinder is my new friend.

wash the bracket and you should find some spot welds holding it on..
you need to drill out the welds.. or as you say grind it off

There spot welded, just drill them out

if done carefully, a grinder will have less of an impact of what it looks like once the brackets have been removed..

ground mine off with a die grinder turned out very neat, but i ended up screwing checker plate over the top anyway.
