Hello Zookers,

I like to start off with how awesome everyones rides are on this forum!!!

Now to the question I need answered I have a 1974 Suzuki Sierra with a F10A 1L engine, it only comes with 4 speed I was wondering if its possible to change the gearbox to a 5 speed?

If it is possible does it require alot of modifications?

Thanks guys

Just to clarify.

1974 would make it an LJ series suzuki, at that age probably an LJ50

either that or its a type O and you meant 1984?

If its '74 it'd be an LJ20, with a 359cc, two stroke FB engine...

either way there are options for a 5 speed.

if its a sierra the late 1 litre sierra did come out with a 5 speed. also the maruti 5 speed will fit i believe.

if its is an LJ you can make a hybrid box using a carry 5 speed. there is a write up around here some where on it.

1984 is the changeover between a Type 2 and Type 3 SJ40. If you have a full width plastic dashboard (T3), it is fairly straightforward to rebuild your box as a 5 speed using the internals from a 1.3lt Sierra.

If you have a metal dash with plastic just around the instruments (T2), then you will have to source a later 1.0lt box PLUS the 5 speed internals.

303zuke, i have the metal dash with the plastic covers on both ends of the dash. Do you know if it's going to bolt staight on or do I have to do some mods?

Oh no, you will have some mods.

Once you have sourced the later box and assembled the 5 speed internals in it (remeber to use the Input shaft from the late 4 speed to match the clutch), It will bolt directly onto the back of the engine. You will need to dick around with the rear gearbox support as they will be different between the early/late boxes, and you may need to gently panelbeat part of the Trans tunnel as the later box is wider and can foul the bodywork. You will also need a larger sliding yoke for the back of the gearbox, as the later box has a larger shaft/spline size.
