The plan is to upgrade to 33"s, probably by the end of the year.

I've already got a locker in the rear and I'll be locking the front too. So, I'm thinking I'll need to run strengthened axles in the front. As the new axles will be 26 spline, they will go in when the locker goes in. And I'll get a knuckle rebuild kit and do the whole front end while I'm at it.

To fit the 33"s a 1" BL will go in (just to lift the t-case really) and a virtual lift for the rest. Front diff will be repositioned, and I might even do a "mini RUF" with mazda springs.
Oh and of course I'll have to get another ( ) set of gears too.

Silverstone MT 117 Extremes (33x9.50-15LT) are the tyres I'm looking at. I hear they actually measure a little smaller in diameter and they're only 10mm wider than my 29"s, so I'm not sure if they will scrub on the springs or not.

I thought I'd go the axles and locker first, as my 29"s are pretty much brand new, then go bigger wheels and guard chop later.

sounds good, locker and axles then 33's but yeah they are meant to be 31"s i think, Want33's off outerlimits has them? Maybe ask him?

Mine are 33's, but measure 32" Nankangs mudstars...Cheaper brands are generally smaller i think also

With regards to the virtual lift - going from 29"s to 33"s, I'm assuming I'll have to move the flares up 2", and obviously cut/chop/massage and then patch up underneath? Or will I have to go further?

Gee 33's bloody big upgrade, sounding pretty serious now. What transfer gears do you have in atm? Maybe worth lowering the diff gearing while your at it to help her on road as well, depending how much reduction the next set of x-fer gears will give you in high range.

Need bigger wheels cos I'm sick of getting stuck in the bloody huge bog holes down here - the water is real cold!

I've got 4.16:1 gears now, I was planning on going to 6.5:1.
I do really like low range now and was hoping to not go much lower. But I think the 6.5's will be way lower, even with 33". If I could change diff gears instead and keep the high-low ratio I have now that would be ideal.

if youve already got 4.16 in your tcase i'd be inclined to try and leave them and do diff gears rather than re-do you tcase, especially since you only trying to spin a 33 silverstone, since its a bit smaller, skinnier & lighter than a full 33x12.5...

is your suzuki NT or WT.
If WT, it has 3.7:1 Ring & pinion gears in the diff, you could throw in a set of NT r&p gears which are 3.9:1. It would help a bit, not sure how much though, maybe type the figures into a gearing calculator and compare it to the figures of your current setup on 29's.

if it,s a wide track , you will get rubbing on the springs & reduced turning circle !!
on my latest build , its a WT , but i,ve changed it to NT spring positions !!

Going from 29" with WT diff ratio of 3.7:1 to 33" I need diff ratio of 4.21:1

I know 4.57 are available, but they will be a little too low for my liking. WHat other ratios are available?


Moose - are your rims offset? I'm hoping that these tyres, being slightly smaller diameter and narrower, I might be ok?

Moose - are your rims offset? I'm hoping that these tyres, being slightly smaller diameter and narrower, I might be ok?

your better off going for the 4.6's as they are available. plus the extra will compensate for the extra rotational mass ( i.e- a little more horsies). but if you can find 4.3's from an x-90 that will do, but good luck finding a set at a good price.

I put in an order today for axles, knuckle rebuild kit and some diff caps (cos I've put a big ding in the front diff )
When it all arrives, I'll get the front locker sorted.

That is a nice size! I wonder how they wear on road? I'd be tempted to change my 32" mongrels for a set of those.

watch out its not just the cheap brands that are skimpy my mate put 33's on his hilux but they measured out to be ust very slightly under 31'

So, the axles arrived the other day, along with some other bits and pieces.
I have ordered a rear air locker, and will take the diff centre into the shop to get it installed.
Do the chromo axles just go straight into the hub? ie. Is it the same spline at the wheel end as stock? Or do I need to change something else?

And has anyone welded protection onto their diffs? I have some diff caps to weld on. Will I be right with a stick welder and a thin electrode? Or should I really use a MIG instead? I wont be welding to the thin, convex shape of the pumpkin, but only the thicker outer ring part (if you get what I mean).

Well, the front-end rebuild is starting a little early, due to a small brake problem.

The only thing I am missing to complete the job, is a 50mm socket. I know you can do the screwdriver thing, but I'd rather do it properly.
My torque wrench has a 1/2" drive, but I'm having troubles finding a socket to suit. There's plenty of 50mm 3/4" drive sockets around, but none that are 1/2".

Can anyone point me in the right direction?

Yeah, thought of that, but it will just add extra cost. I would prefer to buy the socket only.

Sure did, they could only order one in, along with an adaptor.
Also tried Burson's, Websters and some other tool shop in Lonnie.

dont get the one from repco, i did and its just not deep enough to get it done up right but will do the job with a bit of stuffung around.

I got a Kinchrome one with an adapter. It's deep enough.

lowrange has the 50mm socket,shoulda got it while u were getting axles....Just use a screw driver it doesnt mess it up if you be careful
