what tryes should i go for cooper st's or bfg at's i cant decide everyone tells me different so i may aswell get a few more opinions and feel free to recommend a whole different tyre this is my first tyre buy so i have no clue what's good n what's shit.

I loved my MTR's and love my ATR's (Goodyear) so will throw that into the mix

I have always found companies either spend their money making good tyres or spend lots of money telling people how good their tyres are, which category do coopers and BFG fall into

The company I'm currently subby-ing for, McDonnell Dowell, run the ATR and MTR's exclusively on all their cars. They have a hundred or so vehicles on the site I am on, Cruiser wagons and Hilux's. They take a lot of punishment and seem to wear really well. Haven't seen any problems with them yet.

I've always been a BFG fan, I would definitely pick them over Coopers. I've driven an older Hilux on Coopers and it locked up the brakes all the time. The tyres had gone really hard and didn't grip that well. I guess this is why they last so long. They may be ok on a heavier vehicle, ie; Cruiser or Patrol but I wouldn't put them on my Zook.

spend a few more dollars and get a set of new offset rims and decent tyres both for on and offroad...

so to throw another option in, ProComp Xterrains....
SHOULD be able to get them all in a half decent package price for somewhere around $1000...ballpark figure

yer i haven't heard anything good about coopers yet, except 4wd Monthly mags and dvds just seem to advertise them alot.

ummm lets see.........firestone (the ones steve used to hve on his OLD sierra) seemed to be ok.....i think they were the firehawk RMT. depending on what sort of tyre you want ie. MT or AT for an AT the pirelli scorpian AT or ATR have got good reports from some people. my EX fgather in law had kumho venture AT's and they lasted AGES!!!!, he didnt do a lot of off road work tho mainly just dirt road driving. the maxxis tyres seem to be ok as well

coopers ATR works well 4 me. A mix of dirt ,rocky tracks, and heavy wooded tracks on the farm have seen them looking the goods, better than the landy with BFGs that seem to get a flat every now and then, but its all about correct tyre pressure no matter what the tyre or your budget. Get the best quality tyre u can afford and play with the tyre pressures on different tracks because in the end, u have to dry the car each day.

i ran stt coopers (33x12.5) and goodyear mtr's (31x10.5) on my last car.

never had a problem with each but the coopers held up better then the goodyears. the mtrs didn't bag to well but do hop out of ruts better than the coopers because of the side biters. about the same on road but coopers make less noise

when every thing is wet its doesn't matter if your tread is soft or hard, your tread blocks are whats keeping you moving. on rocks the coopers griped very well because of the bagging (was running about 8 psi in both) but when the wheels started to spin thats when the mtrs got ripped up, half of the tread block would rip off

i would like to go coopers again but depends on the price when i'm looking for wheels next

Depends on the terrain you're going to tackle of course, Marksy, but my money goes on Pirelli Scorpion ATs.

I've been running them on my LWB Sierra since I bought a second hand set in 1998, now on the set I bought new in '03.

Mine are 235/75s on 7" alloys. Fantastic on sand at around 14psi, the same on bitumen at 24psi front and 20psi rear. Good handling and low noise levels on bitumen. Mind you, I dont think the tread pattern wuld be aggressive enough for rock crawling, but 'we West Ozzies are called sandgropers for a reason!

well i had the coopers on my patrol and i went through 12 in 3 years with the lugs ripping off and the steel belt exposed they are just the biggest waste of money and the biggest piece of crap thyres you can get as soon as you got near a 4wd track they went flat,so i had to buy an arb tyre repair kit just to keep going
I now have the mtr's and have only had one slow leak (it was a screw nothing 4wd related) and they have done all the same tracks and more than the coopers

summary,,,waste money == coopers
invest good money====anything but coopers

i got a set of remould mts that i think are pretty good value i think they are about a grand for a set of 5 on rims they probably wouldn't last that long on something heavy but the guy i bought them off used to drive 60ks a day to and from work and they don't have much wear

how log ago did you have the coopers bear? i know the old ones had less ply in the side walls and would blow out at low psi. just wondering if i got away with it because of how light the sierra was.

with the mtrs i wasn't ripping lugs off but they were ripping in half then the loose have was getting ripped off (hard to explain)

i have a set of silver stone at's on the front of my work car (hilux) and they hold up pretty well, nice on the road and in the wet, bag nice and don't seem to get cut up on rocks

August this year i will have had the goodyears 2 years so it was a while ago now the goodyear mtr's have about 50,000kms on them now

i got the first set off coopers in 03 and i strung them out to last a bit over 12 months and the second set i got late 04 and they lasted till august 06 so i got a bit longer out of those but only about 45,000 kms but in between times they went in for three major repairs,,,the first cooper that went only lasted 3 days and they said because i was 4wdriving i got no warranty so i was really pissed (goodyear strathpine wankers)

for a really talked up tyre they were a real let down but that is my experience with them


if anyone goes down that road in brisbane the only place to go is fourbys they replace them easier than a lot of tyre shops because they are the importer, the others stuff you around because they have to talk to the rep and stuff around because they might not get a credit for the old ones so they dont want to lose money

I've got Cooper ATR's 225/75-16 - they are the LT 10 ply version, have done around 20000k on them so far, and very little signs of wear - mainly road use at the moment. (although one is a bit chewed due to the wheel alignment being out for a while )

My father in law has a Honda CRV with the passanger rated ATRs on it - they lasted 96000k before they needed replacing.....

hey ODA1 from what ive found out from starting this thread and from people in person bfg are a bad choice they seem to be spending money on advertising not making good tyres its clearly up to you i havn't got a set of these myself but at work we work with the dse on occasions n there's some mad fella's there on the crew and they said so far the best there got on there cars are 50,000 and the side wears out

hey ODA1 as i said i havn't tried them personally i am also looking for a set of 225/75/16's for my 98 gv so if you do try them let me know how they go. im planning to get silverstone at - 117 specials for my sierra at $145 a tire they're supposed to be a fairly good tyre for the price .

so i had a customers new GV diesel sunday & monday to fit a few things and noticed some nice looking at's ( cant remember brand ) on it and mentioned to the wife that i liked them and she said
" they dont look chunky enough " so i have just orderd a set of cooper Stt for the little red wagon , it wont be used as hardcore as most on here so they should stand up

i have a set of 235/70R16 cooper st on my GV XL7, done 40000 with no problems and still plenty of tread. go well up the beach and little offroad work. they are not the best in the wet. i've had bfgs and had no troubles till around 100000k when a belt broke and the tyre fell apart, but bridgestone a/t would be my all round favorite, happy shoping.
