Hi all, Got myself my first zook. 91' 1.3l Sierra.

But when i first got it the clutch was slipping slightly and my mechanic told me to replace it. So i went down and got myself a H/D Sierra clutch kit. (plate, pressure plate and thrust bearing) cost me a touch over $300...

After about 6 hours of mucking around i got the old clutch out and the new one in, but the clutch wouldn't separate. So i put the car in first gear and started it and it didn't like that much as the car would just move forward with the clutch peddle totally in. Played around with the clutch cable too but no luck.
So then after all of that we had to pull the transmission out and put the old one back in. Called up the joint i got the clutch from and explained the situation, and they said i might have a Swift flywheel. So i gave the sierra pressure plate back to them, i kept the clutch plate and they gave me a swift H/D pressure plate back.
So again i pulled apart the transmission, and installed a sierra clutch plate and a swift pressure plate. The pressure plate this time actually bolted a bit easier onto the flywheel. Put it all back together started her up and i could select first and drive away, hooray it worked!

Only problem now (1,000kms later) is that the clutch is slipping bad, especially in high revs and in 4th and 5th gear when you put your foot any more that 1/5 on the throttle. I'm wondering if i might have the wrong clutch plate in it or something?
Any ideas would be great as i'm stumped as to what to do...

You have answered your own question..
What did you give back & not replace??

Pressure plate... :P
But now your "new" clutch plate will be buggered to..

Have you played with the clutch cable/checked it since it started slipping?

Do you have an inspection hole on the passenger side that lets you look into the bellhousing, mine has this and the last guy had to put a new clutch in it because it got oil down it... I just siliconed some perspex over it...

Have you got stock tyres or oversized ones?

Has someone borrowed it and burnt the clutch?

I gave the Sierra pressure plate back and he gave me a Swift one in return because he said i had a swift flywheel. No wear on the clutch plate...

I did play with the clutch cable, in fact i replaced it totally. Then i had the pedal free-play about 3cm before it actually started to separate the clutch.

I have stock wheels and there is an inspection hole but there is no oil in there, all dry on inspection. I use it as a daily driver and i'm the only one that has driven it.

Just wondering if i might have the wrong clutch plate as it slips under high revs, 4th, 5th etc...

The fork seemed fine, because I changed the thrust bearing when I changed the clutch. But that only separates the clutch when you put in the peddle, doesn't effect why the clutch is slipping.
Is that what you mean by clutch fork? Thanks mate

Hey Mate,

What condition is your fly wheel in?. Most clutch kits are not covered under warranty if the fly wheel hasn't been machined proir to the installation of the clutch kit. If your in the process of taking the fly wheel off and getting it machined get a new pilot bearing pressed in as well.

No worries,

Yeah pretty much. To my understanding its basically a refurbish of the surface of the flywheel. Its also a good opportunity to determine if the flywheel itself is in good condition ie: Its not warped or cracked.

On another note, I should post another thread for this because I can't find it anywhere else...
But has anyone else had a Sierra engine and gearbox with a swift flywheel?
What did you do when you replaced the clutch? I'm sure over 20 years or so someone else has been in my shoes...

Yeh, that's what I originally thought! What kind of combo did you have?

But I read up on previous forums and a flat flywheel means a swift flywheel. And as I said before, I put a swift pressure plate in, but a Sierra clutchplate in and I have these problems. It works! But not properly.

the flat flywheel gearbox has a different amount of splines, so the stepped flywheel clutch plate shouldnt fit

Sorry, it has a Sierra 1.3l engine, swift flywheel (flat not stepped or indented) and a Sierra gearbox (because the Sierra clutch plate fits the gearbox splines)
It shouldn't work but that's what I have... Any ideas?

no there are 2 gearboxes, different amount of splines on the input

Is this depending on what year model your car is? But anyway, I ordered a Sierra 91' sj413 clutch plate and it fitted when the gearbox went back on!

I havn't had a coily box maybe they are different??

The book list 2 clutch kits but in all the over 100 that ive replaced clutches in there is only 1 type. The swift and sierra clutch plate might be of a different thickness or the wave plate in the middle may be different making it have a different compression pressure when used with the incorect pressure plate causing your problem.

Its like you can bolt a HD SF swift clutch kit into an 08 RS swift, they both have a flat flywheel but the throw of the thrus is different so it does not work well.

You would be better getting the correct flywheel and starting all over again and call it lesson learned.

But there IS a flat & a stepped flywheel for sierra's....

i will also add that ive only seen the 2.1mm stepped flywheel in all the 1.3 sierras ive worked on (including ateco vehicles) .

the only thing i can think of for the flat flywheel is at some stage when the engine died , they got hold of a (sa) swift engine , changed the sump and pickup and tappet cover , and used the sierra clutch plate with the swift flywheel and pressure plate.

I think your right. I'll take out the flywheel and just do it all right once instead of mucking around. Still confuses me as to what the old clutch setup was before I took it out...

They might have, you'll never know. Bit of a pain in the arse though. But I changed the timing belt and tensioners for a Sierra 1.3 engine, and it fitted. Wouldn't a swift engine not fit the same belt?

Swift ran the same belts and tensioners all the way up to the coily.
