I only got a year ~12000k's outta rear shoes doing mainly road work and very minimal offroad wheel deep muddy crap. Shoes were only a few mm from their backing. Wonder if this wear has something to do with the quality of some aftermarket shoes?

Sidenote:

That bloody auto adjuster is a joke. It doesn't seem to auto do much anything! Unless all the aftermarket shoes have got the slots cut to big for the adjuster, the adjuster itself is going to need some modifications

Dan

Yeah I reckon the aftermarket shoes are crap, when I got my vit the rears were a bit shady looking and still original so it was a better do that one day job, 100,000km later :) they got done and were still legal, aftermarket ones seem to go 12 months and are stuffed

and yeah that hole needs to be spot on in size, if you cant get a good set welding it up a bit works well :)

Spot on the thinking. Yep these shoes are balls! Good for cars like camo that don't move and such but they are just crap! Know who makes a descent set? I don't a spare set of adjusters (thanks steak) that im gonna modify and build up with weld. Looking at it in theory the ratchet auto adjuster should work pretty well if the bloody arms on it don't have to move more than 10mm to just make contact with the shoes under pedal!

I gotta say I hate drums on a wet road, especially in the boingy bouncy old zook. I've had a couple of 'do I have back brakes?' incidents over the wet summer, lucky I was driving like the Stigs mum at the time.

My drums were rebuilt this time last year when the guy I bought it off needed it done for RWC. 12 months later and they're on their last legs? That's not good enough, especially when the fronts are still good as gold.

Alien if you go ahead with the idea I wanna check it out - if i'm chewing through rear drums every 12 months I don't think a disc conversion is such a silly idea

If you have that much issues with them on a wet road then theres seriously something wrong with them or it actually hasn't got anything to do with them at all. Ive had no issues with the rear end breaking power at all.

As royce said discs dont provide anymore breaking force, I think they actually have less than a good working drum setup. Drum system is self assisted meaning once applied they will attempt to pull themselfs on harder and they also have a heap of surface area! Of course you will run into problems if tehy get filled with muck or water as they cant exspell the ingress as well/quick as discs.

my issue is chewing through rear shoes every 6-9 months depending on the offroad terrain i drive - the rear disc wouldnt be intended for better braking (other than when drums would fill with water) but rather longevity from the rear brake pads.

Ive got 3 cars in my shed that are drums all round, they work fine, I fact I'd bet you one of them would out stop 80% of cars on the road with disks.
The trick to drums is to adjust them properly, then they work fine.

every car on the road ran drums all round in the 60's and your poor old granny managed to survive driving with them

better cooling and self adjusting is really the only advantage on disks

The ferrari I saw yesterday at Wayne Park Milton had massive rotors. My guess is that it pulled up better than a sierra with rear drums

To me it seems pretty obvious. The reason for doing a disc conversion is so the brakes actually work after going through mud. :helloo: Personally, I drilled a hole in the top of the backing plate so that I can wash the mud out. Works a treat, and the handbrake is awseome :D

give both of them the same hydraulic pressure in and you may just get a shock :)

One day when the mini is near your place ill let you have a go of the un boosted brakes :) (yes you will fit)
