Yeah I'd go auto if I can get my greasy little mits on one, as I consider its one less headache getting the gear stick in the right place, instead all, (I say all, not quite as simple as it sounds I know) you have to do is place the auto shifter, then you just need to worry about where the transfer lever goes, if it does need shifting, which it probably will.
As for the engine to suspension harmonics, unfortunately the only way to find out is to do it, due to the lack of information on a conversion like this, if there is as you say there could be fatzook, then I think carefully tuned spring and shock rates would be the answer, whilst at it I would also like to go over to power steering.
I'm still of the opinion, till further research says otherwise that this can be done successfully, there are many problems and issues that will come up, but whether or not the are confirmed I/we won't know till someone actually does it. I'm going into this with my eyes open, with full knowledge that this could be a massive waste of time and money, but what if it does work how good would it be !!!!.
Just a quickie for fatzook, I am taking your comments as cronstructive, please keep'em comming as they give me food for thought, I know the harmonic issue may seem like I've just brushed it off, but I haven't, I just can't see a way of predicting the outcome till its done.
Just one more thing while I'm on my soap box, I am an engineer by trade and have worked for a number of years within auto manufacturing trade as a develpment engineer machining and fabricating parts for tvr sportscars when it was based in the u.k, I know saying that has probably set me up for a massive fall somewhere along the line, but hey, I'm prepared to give it a go and see what happens, nothing ventured nothing gained and all that, oh yeah I do intend to get the car engineered when and if the conversion is done,
So, let the research begin

you also need to consider the carrying limit the front axle is rated at
Dont think you are a pioneer here, many have fitted diesels before you, just most of em got flogged off as they were horrid or by the time they were sorted they were a hilux with a sierra body on it

I don't for one minute think I am, I just want to give it a go to see how it works, it may work and work well, it may not.
The reason I put it out on the forum was to get peoples opinions, if it looks as if its going to be a lux with a sierra body on it, then it won't happen, and I'll go down the Baleno route.
I'm not interested in sticking toyota or otherwise diff housings under it, my limit is engine and gearbox, at a push the donor vehicles tranfer box.
The fact a diesel conversion is not a popular one is part of the reason I want to do it, this may all come to nothing I know, then I will know.
If the nay say'ers out there want to bag me for having a go then fine, but don't expect me to be interested in those sort of comments, if there are any prurists out there that don't like the idea of me putting an engine in my suzi that is from another manufacturer then that is up to you, this is a free country and you are entitled to your opinion, as am I.
So please if you see a problem, please give a reason for the comment, not, just you can't do it because blah blah blah no one else has been successful

I think it would be a wicked conversion. I wish we could get the jimny diesel's here.
Have you looked at the diesel jimny motors?
Edit: Looks like some has put a VW motor in a samurai
Thank you John Paul for your answer. I would try to be more specific so maybe you can help me more. I choose to buy a Jimny because is the only 4 x 4 my pocket can handle for now but his engine and horse power are very low. I made a search and in the www.rocky-road.com I saw that they have put a VW 1,9L turbo diesel engine in a samurai and I though may I can change Jimnys engine too. I saw also that someone has put a Vitara engine in Jimny. I have notice that trucker is small but is smaller than Vitaras too. I want diesel engine for fuel economy mostly but not instead of power. Almost all companies have suv and pick ups with diesel engines so I ask this question and hoped that someone know if some of all this engines could fit. Imagine if we have the capability to fit a turbo diesel engine like Nissan Navaras engine, this little car would be like flying.

To help with the whole balance/suspension harmonics I would think a RUF would be a good start pushing the diff forward 40mm
Another thing would be to mount the engine as far back as possible even if you were to recess the firewall.

Hi Monkey
Yeah had a look at the suzi diesels, shame there're not over here, just had a look at the second hand uk market, jeez they are for sale for next to nothing, bugger.................
Thank's in bits yeah that may need to be done, certainly something to look at while I'm doing it, the first thing in my mind is to decide and sorce an engine and see how it looks in the sierra, I may need to move the diff housing for clearence issues, plus as you say it may help with the harmonics, just lengtherning the wheel base a little bit. I don't know how complex this is going to get at the moment, I'd like the car to remain as stock looking as I can, which also raises clearence issues all round, but first things first, try and find an engine..................
Thank's Everyone

Not sure if this will be a help or a hindrance... but the GV comes with a diesel engine, 1.8 or 2L i think it is... not sure if it will fit in a sierra engine bay, should fit into a Vit... but possibly something to consider...

Thats a big job to do. The airbox is literally bolted to the firewall, meaning ANY movement will require dash mods.
And Toysuki, I don't think anyone here is having a go at you. I love seeing different and unusual mods on sierras. But the one thing about a sirra that you should avoid changing at all costs, is its light weight and nimble design. Heavy motors REALLY wreck everything thats good about a sierra. Moving the front axle forward and carefully tuning the suspension to suit the added weight will most certainly help.
By the sounds of it you are up to the task, but as with every major mod, you will need to go into it with your eyes open, and expect that there will be unforseen problems, that may require more money/ time/ fabrication than you are not willing to submit too.
I for one wish you all the best.

Got a reply from the owner of the td vitara
Hey the vitara has a nissan serena 2L turbo diesel it has the vitara 4 speed with a custom torque converter and stronger internals
It uses an adapter plate similar to a Sierra g16b adapter plate

another option you might like looking at getting an engine out of NZ. They've been getting small turbo diesels for a lot longer than we have.
I was looking at a Toyota 1N-T turbo diesel. Have a look here:
http://auszookers.com/index.php?name=Fo ... ta++diesel
I contacted a fella in NZ and his mate did the above conversion with a late 70's/early 80's Corona 5 speed gearbox. Apparently it was pretty good: great torque and economy, but did need uprated front springs for the extra engine weight (I think around 40kg extra, but it might be a little more).
Let us know if and how you go ahead with the project. I love diesels too.

One way to help with the gearing issue could be to replace the transfer with a remote case out of a mq patrol as then that way you will have a 1:1 high range plus the cae offsets will match the sierra diffs but you will lose the option of reduction gears for low range work

Vitara transfer would be a better option still 1:1 high and smaller

Okay, I think I may have found an engine for to suit the job, there is a peugeot 405 1.9TD comming up at the auctions over here.
I've had a look at the gear ratio's and they seem to work, if not there is an alternative way of doing the conversion with another gearbox that will fit, but I'd like to use the siearra's box.
I know the poms put these things into sierra's, but, yeah there's always a but isn't there. I can't find a firm that does the adaptor plate, any help on this would be great, a little more research on the engine is needed, the power figures are good at 68kw.
The thing that has become apparent is the engine weight (thank's for pointing that out fat zook) how heavy is the bugger, thats going to be a hard one to suss out off the net. I use to own one of those Peugeots back in pomme land and they were a good little performer, but about the most boring car on the planet, and from memory the engines weren't big things, but certainly bigger than the sierra's 1.3, right I'm off to do some digging around looking at stuff like sump shapes etc, thanks for all the replies, I had a look at the yoiutube vids, god I wish vw diesels were popular back in the 90's here lol, GV donk's, hmm sound as if they are a little big, but worth looking at, NZ engines, good idea, just worried what'll turn up if the sender knows its comming all the way overhere, hmmmm
other transfer cases, when I get that far I'll be a lot happier, but its good to be looking ahead that far just incase the gearing becomes a massive issue
Thank's once again

This will make a good build thread once you start the conversion.

Okay, does anyone know how heavy a 1.3 sierra engine is, just found the weight of the Peugeot engine and it comes in at 188kg's, it'd be nice to get a comparison, i.e is the diesel twice the weight, or is it even worse, any help would be great
Oh yeah, thats the weight of the engine with all the ancillaries on it
Thanks

The Tata Techoline uses a copy of the 405 engine, you could grab the gearbox from one of those for cheap I'm sure. Probably be cheaper than getting an adapter plate made.
For anything you want to know about the Pug engine, ask here.
It's been a while since a looked under the bonnet of a 405 but I'm pretty sure the diesels had an alloy block so it shouldn't be too heavy. It'd certainly be a lot bigger than a 1.3 though.
I remember looking for springs I found a few places that sell heavier ones for diesel Sierras, you'l need those for sure.
Thanks
Hayden

I'd say thats a long motor with ancillaries. And I'm pretty confident that an extra 110kgs over the front axle will be a very large nail in the handling's coffin.

Yep I agree, over 100kg's extra, wowee, I think I'll give the pug engine away, plus the sump is low, and the oil pump is at the what would be the front of the engine, right where the diff housing wants to be, hmmm back to the interweb, all good fun lol
Thank's royce for the link to the weights
Thank's everyone
we're getting there, where ever there is

Diesel pro's:
economy/fuel range
not so many issues with water crossings
can make good torque at tthe right rpm
running on angles isn't such an issue
Diesel con's
heavy
expensive rebuild
early models lack rev range
late models usually have zero torque at low rpm making hill starts difficult

Suzuki owners should be used to this anyway
