Can you have too many tyre threads? I don't think so!!!

So i'm trying to figure out what tyres I want to end up with. I'm currently running 32x10.5 mongrels on 8" rims. Here are some other things to consider:

* I want to go taller, approx 33"
* I want to go skinner, about 9"
* I'll be running a EFI 1600, 6:1 'hopper and 3.9:1 diffs
* I do drive on roads a fair bit, but am happy to put up with the noise etc of an aggressive tyre

I need at least a 31" to keep the revs reasonable on the road.

I've been thinking about 235/85R16s but i'm not sure that they will be tall enough for me. They'd probably be OK for a road tyre but I think I want something a little taller for offroad. I don't like wide tyres on the road, but off road it's not as much of an issue for me so perhaps I should consider just getting a 2nd set of rims & tyres, and just going for a 33 or 35 x 12.5 (easier/cheaper to get), and run 235/85R16 (or 750R16) on road. Split rims would look kinda cool!

If going for just one set of tyres maybe something like 34x9.5 swampers. I know on road wont be so nice but i'm driving mongrels at the moment and don't find that too much of a drama. Would the swampers really be that much worse? The other thing i'm not sure about is how much they would wear, but the zook is light weight, and they have 20mm tread depth anyway!

I'm interested to hear what ppl think, including other options I haven't thought of!

I think tire type is more important than size and what you want it to work well on

and I dont think 235/85 will be big enough, how about a 9R?

9R? You mean 30x9.5? That is shorter than a 235/85 AFAIK.

Yeah, kinda exy I think being truck tyres, and would need some cutting to get them to bag! The Michy XL's look cool though.

legal.....on a zook....soon as you go above 31's use what you want..legal or not.......i run 285 16's and love em, any bigger and i start taking steps backwards.

They look decent, but at 12.5 wide they are a bit fat for me onroad.

Handling. I think about 9" wide is good for zooks on road. Any bigger than that and the tyres really start telling the zook where to go, instead of the other way around.

nah...i could go lower in gearing. it just starts affecting reliability, clearances and braking performance, with very little if any gain offroad. i could waffle on about lots of stuff, but i wont. i have made my compromises when biuilding the vehicle and the 285's or 33's are the best compromise for what i wanted.( let me know if you do want me to waffle on....)

no i think you would be very surprised with these babaies. they are very round in the carcass and tend to look very skinny. they handle really well onroad, i sometimes run them on my GQ stocker. best 'road tire' IMO. which is a big call considering i have more $$ in tires than some guys cars cost

I voted swampers. But would say offroad only and find some 31's for onroad. I am aiming for 32x9.5's TSL's for my offroad tyres, think anything wider in the taller sizes would be to much strain on the zuk diffs.

I had a 36" TSL's on my lux and loved em, wouldn't use them on the orad though.

I'm leaning towards something like that setup I think. Trade my mongrels for something a little more road friendly and get a 2nd set of off roaders.
