I have a transfer i was going to pull apart to install 6.5s into.
the speedo cable is stuck, i was undoing the grub screw that holds it in place then the head sheared off. I tried using a easy out then that snapped, then i tried drilling it out, then the bit snapped

can i still disassemble the case with the speedo cable still in? Or should i get a new case to use?

You need to remove the speedo drive to fully disassemble the case....
I'd try again with another case if you've already snapped off so many bits.

How about using a dremmel to just cut a slot out from where the snapped bit is to the edge and slide the whole thing out including the broken bits.

'cos it doesn't go perpendicular into the speedo housing, it locks into a groove like a crank cotter. It will have to be drilled of the whole depth.

Ridge, how on earth did you shear the head off that puny little bolt? You were turning it the right way, right? Or does the case have massive corrosion?

i had the feeling i would need a new case, it was free and needed a rebuild anyway.

How big is the bolt we're talking about? could he as has been suggested, just drill the thing out?

Also if you had trouble with the reverse drill, couldn't you drill it with a small normal drill first and then have another go with a reverse drill after heating it?

it's a 6mm metric thread, and has a non threaded bit on the end for locating into the groove. you could drill it out to the root diameter of the thread (5mm) and then retap it afterwards, but you need to be drilling in the centre of the bolt and make sure it drills square so it drills down the bolt and not into the housing.

the bolt is a tiny thing.
i originally drilled in the centre of the bolt to fit the easy out. The easy out worked for half a turn then snapped (a cheap ripco set). i then tried to re-drill to the side of the broken easy out then my drill bit snapped. It is not possible to drill through tool grade steel with the bits i have, they turn blunt very quickly.

I saw that you'd tried an easy out but didn't realise it had snapped IN the workpiece, thought you just broke it and didn't want to do it again.

What about a really narrow cold chisel or punch and put a groove in the top then use a screwdriver (that is if you got it loose and just can't turn it out)

Else drill beside the broken off easyout, then snap it out with the punch?

There is no more room to drill into the bolt , it is about this size in dia O and there are 2 broken bits in it.

Im looking for another case to use, already spent too much time on this one.
