leds that Ive seen(ridgid 30") are great for close up work say 50meters (shit all over every thing else).
but are fucking usless on the hiway as at 100km's your travelling faster than the light throws to be usefull.

hid's are the stuff to have if you get good ones that are set up for the light they are in. as shep said above if they are retro fitted incorrectly you will get shitloads of light but all in the wrong spot and a big black hole where you want the light.
I run 55watt 200mm factory nite staliker and they throw great light to about 2km. cost abot $ 450 - 500
remember the hids take a few seconds to warm up if they have been off for a couple of minutes.

Halogen are the best option for a bolt on and forget setup they are easy cheap and light up quick and you can get globes anywhere.
a good set should light up to 1km.
Halogen down side is they use about 3 times more power for simliar light outputs to 35watt hid

I would get the LED for close range comp work and as described for massive output for approx 50 metres.

A HID or halogen is better for greater distances.

Choose what you need.

I find sometimes the halogens/HIDs are too bright sometimes and blind me when they reflect of a roadsign.

Having both too choose from would be the best option.

I run a pair of narva extremes, regardless if you get the halogen or hid version the body of the light Is moulded to take a slim line ballast internally. I got a pair of the extremes for 360 and retro fitted some hids for 70, solid light and pretty damn bright
