High range is 1.320
Low range is 2.145
This is for 1998-2005 the vvt Jimny is different again
Its funny the comments of Sierra drivers when a jimny man asks a question.....

hey guys, would a jimny running 30s require reduction gears?
i've done a serach but couldn't find the right answers
main concern is how it would be in city driving running 30s compared to factory size tyres
thanks

my jimny is running 31s at the moment and has not had any trouble
even in the sand or on most hill climb, just have to slip the clutch a little more,
yet i do have a g16b instead of a g13
so that would help,
u will need to do some guard chopping and a decent lift for 30s
but it can be done

thanks for the info. was looking at a jimny with a 3" lift running 30s. just wanted to make sure drivability wasn't going to be an issue. its running an m13 though.
i've got loads to learn!

If you planning on running 30's you can get them under with a 2" lift but you can't have any off-set on the rims it may have to be 0 off-set or even a positive offset. 89_tintop runs 30's with a 2" lift but with no off-set.

With the gearing a few guys on here are putting sierra t-case in atm that would be the best option for 30's i think as you have more choice in gearing it right to suit the 30's.

yeah i've been reading on that.
if its minimal difference running 30s on stock gearing. i'd just leave it.
i won't be doing any hardcore 4wd'ing.
could even put some factory size wheels on there for city driving...and go to 30s when i want to go camping/off-roading

im running zukenutter's old reduction transfer case. i put a set of 31's on the other day and at 100k's i was doing 4100 revs. stock at 100k's was 4000 revs. i have a g13bb motor. this is the 24% reduction gears. hope that helps.

Jimny's cannibalise rare Sierra parts I guess - to get the gearing they need.
One stop thread with all JIMNY related gearing is a great idea though.

Personally I think the standard jimny with BB or M13 is an underpowered dog. They REALLY need another 20kw in stock trim. So slapping 30's on it will make for a miserable DD. Offroad will also suck massively. 30's are a 13% jump in tyre size. Do you feel as though your jimny can handle that sort of power loss?
Just for reference, 31's are a 15% jump over standard.
JMO
Peter
PS. Smiffkid your testimonial is kind of useless on this one considering you have already rectified your jimnys OEM power deficit

hey Peter, thanks. so with the huge power output of the stock jimny...they suffer badly with 30s?
any other have stock jimny with 30s or so?
thanks

wen sam had the g13bb in his coily it wasnt a huge power increase my g13ba with weber almost kept up with it wasnt much in between and i was running 31's he was running 30's imo 31's are terrible to drive with unless u have the right gearing u will hate driving ur car like fatzook said on and offroad plus not to mention maintenance things like wheel bearings ect it makes life quite hard a good set of 235/75 would be a great size for a jimny but even then u will have a power loss too.

G'day Godziilr, my 2001 manual M13A Jimny has 215/75 R15 Km2's 28's and puts the speedo out about 8% based on GPS (didn't see how far it was out with stock tyres though). Even this modest increase has sapped the Jimny's limited power both on and off road. They also need further reduction in low range to increase capacity off road in my opinion as I prefer the slowly slowly approach rather then the crash test style of driving that is used to get through stuff. That"s why I have front and rear ARB air lockers fitted to mine - a mod to get me out of shit rather then put me further into it!!
So i agree with Peter on this one.

dont go by speed on gps as its not accurate there is a time delay inbetween reading the speed and getting back to the gps

for some reason the speed o on the older model jimny's were out more when you put bigger tyres on, but the new model jimny aren't out by that much.
zukenutter had 235's on his m13a jimny non-VVT and the speed o was out by 10% BUT NOW HE HAS THE M13A VVT with 235's it's only about by 4-5%.

we jsut drove to albany and back
which is 400 kms at 110km
when the zook was stock we could just make it there on a tank,
and now we get only around 320,
plus its heaps of power
we could quiet simply have driven the hole way in 4th,
the bigger motor has made a difference but we are deffinitly doing gears in the near future to help out

hey mate...
I am running 30s as monkey said with only a 2 inch lift and stock gearing g13bb engine.. it is underpowered in my opinion down low and off the mark (up high and when your cruising on the highway its not to bad) revs at about 3400rpm (maybe a tad more) at 100 (90 on the speedo). it is,bearable as a daily but you will have to baby it or you will burn through clutches.
I am currently trying to piece together a sierra transfer case (having no luck ) and will be putting 4.16 gears and probably dropping back to 235s once the 30s run out or someone swaps me

yeah, after doing more reading...i think 235's with a 2" lift seems the most sensible way to go. good compromise and should be enough for what i will use it for.

I think you will need wider rims for 235's something like 15x6's or 15x7's then if you plan on running 235's only with a 2" lift you carn't have any offset on the rims otherwise they will rub like a bitch and you will need to chop you front bumper up alot.

Ok no worries with scrubbing then even at standard height on stock rims, they will be good, and gearing will be fine too.
One of the things to consider is the effect on the gearing - by this I mean you will probably end up with ultra low gears. The manual VVT use a transfer box with 1:1 for high and 4.3 diffs. If you fit a rocklobster your high range will be 1.58:1 which is a huge reduction. It does enable you to go up easily in tyre size but the gearing will still be low. To help you can fit diffs from a non VVT which are generally 3.9:1 (non auto models)
Not helping the situation is also the main gearbox which in 5th on a VVT is 1:1 whereas on earlier models 5th gear is 0,864:1 which is a kind of overdrive gear.
This is the voice of experience telling you this!!
I suppose another option is to use the transfer box from an auto VVT which has a high of 1,32:1 and low of 2,643:1 - the manual car has a low of 2,002:1.
Ok that's what i have found.
