The ol zook has now become very noisy with a knocking sound coming from the sump area (or sounds that way). So I pulled the sump off, all the conrods seemed ok so took the crank caps off and found the forward one had a score in it didnt seem bad enough to make the loud knock. Didnt have time to have a real good look as I did this before going to work this morning
So I'll get some new bearings and throw them in tomorrow if I have time.
Any other suggestions or anything I should look at while I'm in there

get some plastigauge from where you get the bearings, you use this to measure your bearing clearance to see if its ok or not

this may help finding what the noise is...
type: sound: mostly heard during:
Ring noise: high pitched rattel or clicking. acceleration
Piston slap: Hollow, bell-like. cold engine operation and is louder during acceleration
Piston pin knock: sharp metalic rap. hot engine operation at idle
Main bearing noise: Dull, steady knock. louder during acceleration
Rod bearing noise: light tap to heavy nocking or pounding. idle speeds and low load higher speeds
Thrust bearing noise: heavy thumping. irregular sound. may be heard only during acceleration
Tappet noise: light regular clicking. mostly heard during idle
Timing chain noise: severe knocking. increases with increase in engine speed

Thanks Alex
Was also thinking of the timing chain but I didnt think it would make this sound. Had to work late last night so may get into it today and find the culprit

Thanks Lokidog didnt know that,
I've just pulled the bigends off and found one slightly scored. still dont know if its enough to make the knocking sound. Doesnt appear to be any piston pin slop either.
ah well might just have to change them out and see

I think I caught it in time crunched, so should survive for a while
Gus I wouldnt like to break up a set, so will try for a good used one first, by the way mines a G13BA so not sure if the pistons are the same

Well while you have got it pretty much totally apart why not give all the cylinders a quick hone, slap a new set of slugs and ring in?
How many k's on it btw?
