Pulled over by the police in Aspley, on Gympie Rd, heading into Brisbane yesterday, who pulled me over to check out the seats in my SJ50. Yes the seats! So I said the seats were on original SJ50 rails, but were from a Swift GTI, and professionally put together, not by me. Also said the engine (1.6 GA) was not original, and I had taken the car to get mod plates for both, however the engineer said neither required a mod plate!

So they had a look all over the car, lifted the bonnet for a look, then they rang a Qld DoT inspector who told them that yes both needed a mod plate - the seats and the engine.

No fine given, they said get mod plates and that was it.

I'd always back an engineer as to being correct over a DoT inspector or the police, however, I prefer to not have to argue with police!

So Mod plates it is!

Whoever told you that you don't need a mod plate is a pole smoker.

ANY modification that results in a non-standard part being fitted requires a mod plate. The seats and the manner in which they are attached is not standard. The 1.6 was never offered as a factory option, and as such the mounts, adapter and pollution controls must be mod plated.

when i bougth my car it had a 1.6 in it, on the rego and insurance, i went to the transport department to see if i needed a modplate and they said no need as its already on the rego and had been for a couple of yrs. regardless i got a modplate done anyway just to be sure. i figured no one has any idea so id cover my ass just to be safe

Yeah when you are dealing with an uncommon old model car that the people dont know whats what its easy for em to just accept its all normal

Likewise if you talked to the modplate dude and said ey ive stuck some seats and engine out of a swift in my sierra, all bolts in do I need a plate the dude might say no if he took it as it being replacement parts

Overall the whole system is BS!! No one knows what there are talking about and you end up going around in circles. DOT are one of the hardest people to get a straight a valid answer from if your trying to do the right thing....

All 3 departments, engineer, police, DOT need to read the ONE book not print off their own versions to make their own job easier.

Even when you are talking about rules in the book when the engineer steers you back to them. Surely they should have some idea....

There is only one book, it is just interpreted differently.

In the end it is DOT that will win the arguement. If a cop is not sure then he call DOT because that is who supplys the Police with the rules. DOT inspectors are the expert witnesses that are called should a matter be contested in court. So if he books you and you go to court and DOT don't support him you win. So in the end DOT is the authority end of story, not the cops, not the independant engineers..

I've been living in Bris for about 2 years now - but I left my zook registered in the ACT. Changed my postal address on my rego so that my rego labels get sent up here. I've never had a problem with QLD police - I have had a few stop and take a second look, but then they see the ACT rego and walk away.
