I'm trying to take out the rear diff, I'm up to the point of removing the axles, but it's not comming out without a fight.

I've broken my slide hammer trying to get it out so I was after some ideas on how else to remove it.

Just slide them in and wack it with a big hammer?

yep!!!

But be sure the bearing's started in it's hole before giving it a couple of love tap's..

It worked.

i got a jack and put it on the end of the centre, and just lifted really slowly. seal eventually cracked, and much less effort than a hammer

Rather than starting a new thread, I'll chuck it in here..

As some of you may know I'm installing the mini spool diff back into the rear carrier. But I have run into a bit of a problem with reintalling the axles, and I'm a little bit pissed off.

Now This is how I installed the spool in the diff centre.

I'm up to the stage of reinstalling the axles, but what I've found is that it seems that the diff is not cetered.

Left side is butted up in the spline of the spool and won't go any further.



Right hand side is barely touching the spline and is up to the bearing ready to be pushed back in.



What to do?

I presume it would have to do the with the adjusting dials in the diff, even though I set them the way as it was removed.

did you slip the spool over the axle splines before you installed it?

No I didn't, but they are the right spline, Lowrange offroad 26 spline minispool, just like others have in their vits.

The left hand side slips in into the spline, but is sticking out too far for the bearing to be pushed in, the right hand side isn't long enough, so I'm thinking the diff is not centred.

Are you sure the left one is lined up correctly? That is a long way out still, looks like the axle hasn't gone in to the centre yet. No amount of wiggling it gets it further than that?

Right one looks like it might just be ready for a hammer?

yep it's all the way in the centre. The right side is ready for the hammer but it's barely touching the spline.

I'm just going to have to take it out and put the standard diff back in.

The plan was to have it all ready for tommorow's camping/fishing/4wd'ing trip. I'm spewin.

I placed the axles next to each other then went and had a sandwich and just 1 beer then got back to it. I cracked the shits after it wouldn't fit and said that's enough for one day.

After a fair bit of head scratching, swearing and stressing this morning, one of the voices in my head said, out of curiosity see if they are in the correct side. I looked at the brake line fittings and CLICK... The voice in my head said, I told you your an idiot.

I graciously accept the dipstick award this week.
