??? As in the burble burble burble like it's a way bigger engine? Mine does that when I change down but I have a feeling it's more the exhaust than anything else.

Nah, an oncoming xr6 turbo backed off the same time as I did and I tripped out till I saw it.

Missed this one. Pinging when backing down thru the gears ay, that is a bit of a contradiction in terms.
Pinging only occurs upon heavy acceleration, fuel is exploding not burning, fuel is to fast a burn rate (low octane) or timing is advanced to far.
Slower burn rate fuel, (high octane) or back off the timing.

I am sorry to ask such a noob question, but the "pinging" noise you are referring to, is it like a kind of whooshing sound? That is the only way I can think to describe the sound I hear while accelerating.

It sounds like there are dozens of little people in your motor furiously beating the piston bores with tiny hammers.

Whooshing, sounds to me like your hearing induction noise, from the carby.
Pinging is more like a "tink" sed in a mickey mouse voice, hit two hammers together softly type tink.

Ok, thank you very much for the replies. I just had my car serviced and was told to run it on 95 (previously been on 91) and was wondering whether still running it on 91 was resulting in the dreaded pinging noise.

The higher octane is the cheaper fuel.
Sounds wrong I know, but you will travel further on the higher octane liter for liter, also, you will notice an improved response.
IF you do decide to run better fuel, run the old useless fuel out as far as you dare, this way when you fuel up there will be less dilution of the good fuel.

I don't get better mileage, or more power. Infact the only car I have ever owned that saw any advantage was my 300ZX. But it was a jap import and already tuned for higher octane fuels than the rubbish we get over here.
The thing I like about the higher octane fuels is that I can't hear my motor melting from the inside on a hot day

My Sierra, and my old Vitara both pinged with 91RON fuel...
I haven't even bothered to try 91RON in the Swift Sport....

i dunno what octane opal fuel is but i had to retard the ignition to 6deg btdc
but it still has plenty of power.
it easily tows my boat at 80kph (4th gear)and holds the speed up hills.

Well thats good considering that you wil void your worthless warranty if you use less than 98RON in the swift sport.

I was once out 100km from the nearest 98RON with the fuel light on so put a splash of 95 in it to get me home. But don't tell Suzuki Australia

im trying to use 98 when i can but drop to premium if its not available.

If you do nothing other than use the better fuel then there will be little or no change, other than the no pinging, if you tune your car to the better fuel, then you will see power and milage gains.
Easy with a carby, not so with an injected car, their computers will only do small changes.
If you really want to see optimum gains on your injected motor, take it to someone who can alter the computer.

Best description I've heard of it is it sounds a bit like the rustling of fallen leaves only a little more metallic

Its a backfire, caused by lean burn. Usually caused by an exhaust leak.

You are a brave man! Be interesting to see how long the rubber carb and fuel pump diaframs last
