Hi all.

I recently changed my tires from stock Bridgestone Duelers to Pirelli Scorpion ATR. Size remained stock (205/70/15). All 4 wheels where balanced.

Now I feel a shudder in the steering wheel when I drive straight and hit 70 kmh. It wobbles from side to side. When I hit 80 kmh this wobbling dissapears.

I wonder if any of you guys had this problem. If you did have this, could you solve it? How?

EDIT: I just stumbled across a website that names this problem "Death Wobble". Is it dangerous?

weird hey, same thing happened to my girlfriends pajero io, got some big tyres and now get vibration at 80km/h, nothing when u go faster or slower. Perhaps wheel balance is wrong? could be a manufacturer fault in the tyre?

swap your tyres front to back and if the wobble turns into a vibration then
take it back to the tyre shop and tell them to do it properly.

Thanks for the answers. I'm planning to get my Jimny aligned in the next days and I'll also get the wheels balanced again, but according to this thread, it hasn't much to do with that:

Mine ended up being wheel bearings/flogged out hubs...checked your bearings yet It could just be shit bad luck with the balance and fitting etc. Either way, good luck with the fix buddy

Will be checking the bearings next weekend, as I don't think it will be a one-day job.

Problem is, there's a lot of tech talk in the other thread I don't fully understand (not native English speaker), so this is gonna take a while until I feel ready to take my jimny apart.

BTW (totally off-topic), what tire pressure do you guys think is the best for on-road driving? I'm going with 23/26, as instructed by Suzuki, but isn't this a bit low?

Hi, yep that is in the right pressure range for a Suzuki, because Suzuki's are so light, putting 32psi or higher, will give you a hard ride, and will wear the tires/tyres quicker, so 23 to 26psi is perfect for a Suzuki, i put 25psi in mine, after going to Suzuki only mechanic, and him mentioning my tyre pressure was to high, so i lowered them, the ride is softer and i get better tyre grip onroad !

Run 22 psi on road and 8-10 Pso off road. I have 30 inch muddies also.

I've been giving some advice to a girl at the local BP regarding the Jimny wobble. She has replaced wheel bearings, done balance and wheel alignment etc with no luck. Mine is pretty good now since I added shims to the king pin bearings. It still gets a little shake every now and then but only slight.

So this is my plan:

1.- Perform balancing again, at another store.
2.- Alignement
3.- Check wheel and kingpin bearings. Replace if needed.
4.- If wobble persists, install shims on bearings.
5.- If wobble persists, install steering damper

Do you guys agree?

Yep, you should move the steering wheel over to the correct side of the car to..

Now I've the exact same problem after changing to a bigger tyres.

Eg. 205/70 R15 to 215/75 R15

My steering wheel start to wobble once it hit 65-75km/hr & disappear after 80km/hr....

Any luck so far with yours HURST???!!!

After advice on this forum I had harder bushes fitted and that has stopped it and also I was advised only get the wheels balance thru the stud (or as some one else called them, finger holes) not the centre hole as it is not accurate enough for 4wd wheels.

mine was sorted buy putting a dampner on it, tho now with the 31s its gets a slight shake when breaking and between about 80 and 85, so im not to worried,
its pretty easy to check your wheel bearing, lift 1 wheel off the ground, then just try androck the tire, if it moves then there a bit loose, its sorta hard to explain if your not shore wat i mean, some 1 will explain it better tho

I had braking wobble on the silver Jimny, was going to replace the rotors but then discovered that the mating surface between the rotor and hub was a little rust pitted and causing the rotor to not mount up true. A bit of wet and dry and some careful wheel lug tightening seems to of fixed it.

I continue to have this problem

Each time I get it reduced to a slight vibration, and every time I go out, it comes back.

I have a steering damper, new bearing on the left after it dicintegrated, some new king pin bearings, wheels balanced, new tie rod end, checked and tightened steering shaft bolts.

Not sure what else to do except maybe shim the bearings. Can I buy these pre-fabbed?

I might get the steering damper condition checked.

Steering dampener will be fine just tighten the bushes. Tighten everything while you're at it. Definitely shim the king pin bearings but don't over-do-it.
I just bought another set of shims from bigjimny, he overcharges for postage but easier than finding them locally.

I went to suzuki to get my wobble sorted...well high hopes of getting it sorted. They said they will not touch my jimny unless i put stock wheels back on, i also asked them, to check, the pre-load on the kings pin, add a skim kit etc...

There reply was " We have had 3 jimny's into today to get all those things done, and none on the above help fix the issue so we didn;t bother adding the skim kit to yours".

can you get shims from suzuki? mine is starting to get a slight wobble but nothing extreme just a nice hand massage. just wanted to do it before it puts wear on other parts.

Ok Suzuki put more pre-load on my king pins and added some toe in camber and the wobble is almost gone now just the tyres need a balance then is should be gone . They would how ever not add shims under warranty unless i took the car back to stock but oh well at least the wobble has gone
