hey all,
i had a search but couldnt find what i was after, also posted this in another thread but got zipo...nothing.
i will be fitting the lwb 1.6 brakes to my swb vit tomorrow and have a few questions.
i got the disk/caliper/pads off a guy on here, the pads have a fair bit of meat on them but im not sure about the disks. i just measured them and they have about 18mm, thats from end to end or face to face. these need to be machined as they have a bit of surface rust so depending on how much gets taken off they could be pretty thin (DBA514 - 287 x 17 = Vitara SE416W LWB) pretty sure this is what i have. so my questions is will these be ok to use or should i buy new disks?
is there anything i should do to the calipers while i have them here...how can i ensure that they will work? ill be giving them a coat of paint to.

if they are over 18mm now its unlikely they would machine to under 17mm, not a lot needs to come off
I would fit new discs and pads so you know its all right for the next few years
As to the callipers, stuck compressed air into the hose input to see if the piston moves (dont let it pop out) and put some rubber grease in the slides and thats about it

i don t think there is any reason to machine vitara rotors because brand new set of dba rotors for a lwb base are only cheap think they are about $60a rotor. off car machining will be about $25 a rotor so there is not much point in my mind better off just buying new ones.

I'm with the robot and the subaru, if you can afford it, new pads and rotors would be the go.
If you can't afford it, how bad is the rust? if it just surface rust, take to it with a bit of emery paper and some brakleen. you should always put new pad with new/ freshly machined rotors anyway.
In saying that, if the rotor is pitted from rust, the machining or a whole new set of rotors and pads would best be aquired before fitting

thanks guys,
does anyone know what the minimum thickness for the disks would be or where i can find out? the pads actually look reasonable new as they have about 6-7mm of meat. the disks are pretty rusty, so prob will just get new ones.
royce- "put some rubber grease in the slides and thats about it" what are the slides? sorry prob a dumb question. if the piston doesnt move, what should i do then lol?
oh and whats the best why to bleed the system? and is it possible to do it alone?

Im not sure about the best way but you can buy like one man brake bleeder kits from car shops and for the piston not moving in the caliper either try and fix it or get a new caliper i may be wrong though

im just about to pull the caliper apart and see what its like, i went to a brake shop and they said that the disks are fine (new is 18mm, currently at 17mm) so they are getting machined now.
if i find something wrong with the calipers, ill get a rebuild kit and try do that.
oh i no what the sliders are now  kind of obvious once u have a look.
i hope i can find someone to give me a hand bleeding them/checking my work, as i dont really trust my self with brakes.

to bleed I jsut leave the nipple loose and let it dribble through till its new clean fluid, if the pedal comes up good, otherwise you havent lost anything

hmmm ok, i asked the guy at the brake shop and he said to suck to fluid out of the reservoir then just put the new stuff in, that way crap doesnt get sucked through the system???
just got back from the shop with machined disks and new pads, cost $130 total - machining + bendix pads (discounted)
also anyone in perth free to help, today or tomorrow arvo?

oh awesome, im at the stage where all i have to do is bolt them on....i assume i will have no issue with this. i need help/shown how to bleed the system, chances are ill be alone so need a 2nd person anyway and want someone to check it all over and make sure that im not going to die.
so if you could come over that would be AWESOME let me know what you drink or something and ill match it. ill be doing the freeway bike hike in the morning but should be home by 10:30. what time is good for you? do you have my number still? if not, ill PM it to you now.
oh after i had painted everything, i went to put the new pads in and guess what? he gave me the wrong ones  luckly the old ones still have 2/3rd left.

its kind of my fault to, when i took them out of the packet at the shop they just looked smaller. i even asked why these new pads didnt have the squeelers like the old ones. just didnt put them side by side.
