Just a quick noob question.

Is there a cheaper way to bring my gearing back down now that I've got 30's on my WT?

I remember someone telling me that you could change the ring gear or something else in the diff to vit ones.... It's probably bullshit but I just don't have the money to blow on reduction gears at the moment...

Thanks guys

U have 3.7 gears, u can put vitara fronts in that are 5.12 in but probably a lil too steep for 30"s, I ran 3.9"s from a narrow track with my old 30"s probably ur best bet to lower it a little, definatly ur cheapest option the 3.9"s bud

You can get 4.3's, 4.6's, 5.1's I think. You wood most likely have 3.7's. Finding them is hard and they aren't that much cheaper than doing transfer gears. Pretty sure want33's has a t'fer with 4. Something gears in it already, would be sweet for 30's

I dunno if 2 5.12 ring and pinion sets is gonna cost you much less than a set of 4.9 reduction gears... Plus, availability can be an issue on these 2nd hand R&Ps... 3.9s may be easier to get hold of, but still, reduction gears are cheap atm...

yeah by the time you get hold of 2 gear sets and get them set up in sierra centers youve spent more than a set of gears, even if you found a pair setup already its going to be close

3.7 to 3.9 isnt quite back to standard, 4.11 is a liitle over so probably the best bet, 5.12 is like 38% over

You'd be better off with a transfer case from a SJ410 (1litre).

1lt transfer cases have same high range reduction as 4.16 gears

around 12% reduction

And you don't just change the Ring Gear. You MUST swap the Ring AND PINION gears together as they are a matched set.

Some of the Suzuki ratios will have the same number of teeth on the pinion, but will not mesh properly with other ratio ring gears. Each ring gear is matched to a pinion by lapping as a specific pair and should not be mixed even with other sets of the same ratio.

You're not going to want the easiest to find vitara gears - they're 5.12:1 and far too short for your tyres.

You'd really want 4.3's or 4.6's.

4.3's come from 2.0litre vitaras or something and it is going to be hard to find a pair for front diffs.

It's not even really that easy to find a pair of front 4.6 diff gears.

If you do, as a bare minimum, they're going to be worth about $150 a set.

It's going to cost about $150 a diff to get these gears set up into your existing diff centres, and you need to do this, as vitara front third members aren't suitable for use in a sierra, mostly because they are made of alloy.

That's $600.

Worked out on 4.6 gears, Your road gearing will be shorter than stock onroad, (100 on your speedo would be 93km/h road speed) and offroad, you are going from 29:1 crawl to 37:1 crawl, which sounds good, but most of that is offset by the tyre size, so your real gearing is only 7% lower.

That's a pretty poor way to spend $600.

A 1.0 litre transfer case would have you geared a little but tall on road - 105km/h across the ground for 100 on the speedo, but off road the gearing would be exactly the same as standard with standard tyres.

I'd just spend the money on 4.1 or 4.9 transfer gears.

Steve.

Ok so it looks as though I should just shell out for the reduction gears then....

I went out to ripleys today and it went pretty well so I think I can wait a couple of weeks before I order the gears.

Thanks again guys.

Wouldn't the turning force on the transfer case be the same regardless of which way you achieve the same ratio? (excuse my lack of a physics degree)

nope, because the reduction is greater its multiplying torque more, every action equal and opposite reaction = more load on mounts

If you dont thrash it youll be right for a while

I twisted my driver's transfer mount first time out with gear's, know about it now & gotten no worse, I can make you a long side mount if you twist yours...

I've got a transfer lift kit that I'm waiting to put in when I do the gears, will that affect things mount wise?

Yeah I'm not much of a thrasher, I'm really only looking at gearing so 5th gear isn't for decorative purposes only.

Perhaps then, I should look into finding some diff gears....

So....

I've been having a bit of a look for diff gears and stumbled across these http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/86-95-Su ... ccessories

I aim to run 31's (about 3% reduction from stock if my calcs are correct)
Currently have 30's which is about 6%

The reason I'm looking at diff gears and not transfer gears is that I'm not really the EXTREME!! 4x4ing type. I think the stock gearing is perfect for my needs and I'd like to get back to it on the larger tyres.

Anywho.....

Pros?
Cons?

Please tell me if I'm looking at this all wrong.

Thanks guys

Dude!! You are looking at it wrong! Among the extra cost and time to set up you are not gonna be much better off with diff gears. The tcase gears are more cost effective! What you get is a gear set that reduces your high range gearing, making 5th gear usable again, as well as at the same time significantly reducing your low range so you don't have to slip/ride the clutch or hit obstacles at high speeds. If your aiming to run 31's are your 'not that hardcore' 4.1:1 or even 4.9:1's are your best bet!

Dan

I'm not too worried about the cost side, I just don't want a LOW low range. I found the stock gearing on my old tyres (215/75 at's) suited my needs. The concern I have is based on the reduction in my lwb, flat out in 4th I'm hitting 25 kms/hr, which is pretty crap for zooming around.

I use my tin top for exploring, the lwb is for more "serious" obstacle climbing.

I do welcome the feedback though! :D
