Hi guys my spedo is not working but the trip meter works, has anyone had this problem?

Do i need a new cable or will it need to be put it in properly?

Also the tacho is cutting in and out, it has the baleno G16B in it and has had the vss thingy done.

If anyone knows how to fix it please let me know as it is really giving me the shits.

Tacho might be a bad earth or the sense wire fault. Speedinis a funny one, especially I'd the odometer is working. Possibly the gauge itself is knackered?? Just throwing some ideas out

I've got a similar problem, but the other way around...

My speedo works, but the odometer doesn't. When I took it apart to install my home made VSS, I noticed a small plastic pinion gear was stripped. it actually looked like it had melted. It had been like that for years...

Pull out your speedo cable, check it at both ends, and lube it. Also check each end it plugs in to (behind cluster and t-case)

Is your tacho from the Sierra or Baleno?

if the magnet disc on teh back is spinning (which it must cause its needed for the VSS) and the odo is working then the cable and most of the drive is ok, sounds like th needle has lost its metal bit inside or slipped off the end of the shaft it pivots on

How do i pull the cluster out? the friggin hazard switch is in the way. And how do i get the spedo cable out from the back of the cluster?

There are three prongs that look like they need to be pulled back to get the cable off, is this right?

Do i need to strip the cluster to access the spedo on the inside or is it all exposed?

Ok i pulled the spedo cable out and used a dremel with a flexi shaft to turn the spedo.

When the spedo is turned backwards the needle moves, when i turn the spedo forwards it doesnt move. WTF

You'll have to undo most, if not all, of your dashboard screws. Lift the dash up so you can slide the cluster out over the hazard switch.

I undid and lowered the steering column( 2 torx drive screws) it lowered the hazard switch enough to get the cluster out

As we discussed, the tacho has a loose connection somewhere. The speedo I thought the cable wasn't pushed in far enough.

Ok ive solved the problem!!!

Problem #1 Spedo:

I tested the spedo with a flexi cable from a dremel, the spedo would not work when it was turing the correct way, i then tried it in reverse and it started to work BUT backwards

I pulled the cluster out, and pulled the spedo apart. The vss mod was done already. BUT the one little levers on the spedo that are used to adjust it correctly, near the copper coloured spinnermajig thing in the middle that holds the spedo shaft and spedo pointer was around the wrong way.

I should have taken some pics to explain it but i was in a rush.

There is a little tab on the copper coloured thing in the middle and it was on the wrong side of the little lever used to make fine adjustments.

So all is good with the spedo.

Problem #2 Tacho Is still Farked:

I checked all the wiring on the instrument cluster and i could not find any loose connections, so the tacho can just stay like that. I will put an aftermarket tacho in later.

Someone in Perth has just recently put a baleno 1.6 into a Sierra & had a mate perform some auto electrickery magic to get the tacho to work with the baleno coil packs.... maybe check out birko or Crewsy's build threads

Conrad. Thats the baleno tacho not the sierra tacho. Just so you know.
The issue has to be around the cluster as when you tap the dash it cuts back in.

yes the tacho does cut back in but it reads mostly 6500rpm when it does come on. I will pull the cluster out later and strip the tacho to check it out. Would be better to have the std looking tacho i spose.

Went wheeling today around my estate they are still developing it, took it up some pretty steep grassy sand dunes, went pretty good, i have to get pics next time. Fark she is a bouncy little thing. I have never had so much fun with any vehicle. I put the alarm system in now too.

Hows the postage costs going Simon, keen to get the rest of the parts.

Hey guys, I'm currently about to start putting baleno into my sierra.

I compared a vit and bal tacho, and interestingly, the only difference is that the bal tacho is rotated 180, which would explain what's going on for you.

I took some pictures, but I don't know how to upload them yet.
