It's a 10mm square drive, using a 3/8 is what rounds them out and fucks them...

So did we decide that replacing the transfer bearings will get rid of the whine?

You can check the rear diff without spending anything.
Remove the drive shaft, and give the input flange (pinion shaft) a wiggle. If theres some play, make a brace to stop the shaft from spinning and tighten the nut a smidge.
Theres info on the tightening torque on the FSM.
I initially let the whine get louder and louder, until the pinion seal started to leak and the noise got even louder.
I put new bearings and a seal in, new crush tube etc and all fixed. However, tightening the nut earlier may have been an easier solution.
If you f*ck it, a new crush tube and seal arent expensive.
EDIT: in regards to the 10mm square drive, I got a cheap 1/2" drive adapter, and carefully ground it down to suit the 10mm square.

Yeah grand dad took it down today and 4 mechanics all mucking around reckon the diff centre in the rear is fucked. Alot of metal came out with the old oil which happened to be fully of metal too
I dunno if yours is the exact same sound though, exact same situation, but id describe it as more of a meshing (well trying too) sound than a whining?

See mines is more whining then meshing, so thats why I bought up this post, casue everyone is telling me rear diff,
But come to think of it I did drive around about week with very low oil in the diif due to axle seal leakes but stoped driving it when it started to sound like meshing, would that f#@k it up ??
But that was last yr some time the noise only started after I picked it up from this shit diff guy, so im confuessed

IN2 I'm really feeling like our noise is the transfer bearings. but just to be sure I'll try changing my rear diff oil. next week is a crazy week at uni but the week after I'll have plenty of time to give it a go. might try to get a sound clip up on youtube as well, if I get around to it ill post the link up.

6.5's are boss regardless, I'm on 29's but will go to 31's, they are pretty well spot on at the moment anyway though, could only be better with the 31's
