I've done a search and can't find what I'm looking for, a whole lot of "replace your vacuum and fuel hoses" but no actual sizes for the hose.

I was wondering from someone who has done the replacement, what size hoses do you need to do the full replacement of all rubber hoses in the fuel system? Fuel lines and Vacuum lines?

I will do the replacement tomorrow before I either swap out the fuel pump or dizzy (both of which I have a spare but the spare fuel pump is untested and the dizzy could go bad if I get it wrong!)

Hopefully it fixes my problem, or both problems. Which are breaking down under load after an extended (read 15-20 seconds) period above about 3800rpm. And the other problem is the hesitation after coming off the pedal and going back on.

I have changed the coil 2 days ago, it pulls harder than it used to now (feels like it anyway, it's happy to rev right out now and it wasn't before) so I'm hoping the fuel hoses fix it!

I have no idea of fuel hose size, sorry, but I do not think that this is an issue.

Lots to check before going to that extent.

First, breaking down at higher revs sound electrical to me, lead or plug breaking down, second, the hesitation after backing off, carby problem, possibly powervalve.

I should have explained the breaking down better, it seems to happen at lower revs as well if you keep your foot flat to the floor for too long which is why I thought it was fuel.

The hesitation thing, well I'm open to suggestions, but I don't want to have to spend $500 on a recoed carby :( I know the thing would run right after that but what if it's not the carby???

The hesitation, does this happen everytime you put your foot down, when you flatten it or even when you bring revs on gently.

Many zooks have the hesitation problem, my daily does, I have buggerized around with it till im blue in the face, have gotten it down to a very minor hesitation only when i floor it.

How long since you changed plugs, leads, tested them.
Common for i or more of these to beak down under loaded conditions.

I changed today:

Fuel lines and vacuum line for dizzy advance, fuel filter, swapped my spare fuel pump on, bought and installed BRAND NEW coil and plug leads, swapped my spare dizzy cap on.

The few things I can think left to do are new plugs, swap to my spare dizzy (harder job) and test another carby. The other thing I can think of is the timing, I'm trying to organise to do that, and kind of want to have a timing light on hand before I go swapping dizzies over...

The problems:

The hesitation is intermittent, it won't happen every time I come off the gas and back on, sometimes it does sometimes it doesn't, it's more often than not though.

It happens whether you stomp the pedal through the floor, or roll it on super duper gently.

The breakdown I thought wasn't happening at lower revs under load, and I still think it isn't, I can sit at around 2k rpm in 3rd with my foot flat to the floor on accelerator and my foot on the brake to keep it going slow and it just keeps on driving, I don't know if I'm not going for long enough but it's WAY longer than it normally takes to break down.

Now, If I stand on it, It will happily rev out past 6000 rpm and pulls hard all the way there. Taking off and blasting up the road changing around 4500 rpm gets you to around 4500rpm in 4th gear before it starts breaking down.

If it starts breaking down with foot flat to the floor, I can push the clutch in, and it continues to drop revs for a while, then bam it will rev out and then drop again, I don't let it do this with the clutch in so as not to redline the poor thing, but if you keep your foot held down after it starts breaking down and you leave it in gear, it starts bunny hopping down the road like a learner taking off for the first time.

It's really really annoying and I'd be happy with the hesitation that it's always had provided I could get rid of this stupid breakdown issue!

Oh and for anyone who found this in the future searching, The hose shop measured the barbs on the outlets and gave me:

8mm hose for the fuel line - this was spot on and fits at the back to replace the ones at the fuel filter as well.

4mm (5/16th I think they gave me) for the return line and feed to the carby - This was a touch tight fitting on the return steel line back to the tank.

Some tube that is slightly too large for the vacuum tubes, it fits on, but I don't feel like it's tight enough so I used cable ties as hose clamps!

Okay this is giving me the shits!

I just drove the zook to algester and back and on the way up I drafted behind a semi the whole way to the springwood exit doing whatever speed he was (up to 110km/h)

The breaking down issue only happened once and I backed off for a few seconds and got back on the pedal and it was fine again. I am thinking this is because I was following the semi and had barely any pedal on.

Which makes me think it's a fuel problem again (carby???)

As on the way home, coming into a headwind, I couldn't get the thing past 90km/h and it would keep losing power and leaving me doing 70 or less in the far left lane with people blazing past and looking annoyed!

I'm going to pull my carby back off later today and make sure I have all the bolts tight and the hoses in the right positions and if I get a chance to I'll try another carby. Problem is with trying another carby, I don't want to touch a mates vehicle that is running perfectly and then have it go back together and be rooted...

Graping at straws here, but, how long ago did you do the fuel filter. I picked up some water, no idea how, and had dramas, changed the fuel filter, no dramas, bugger me, cuppla hundred k later, coff splutter, losing power, WTF, I KNEW it couldnt be the fuel filter, as I had just changed it, (didnt look inside for some stupid reason tho)

Poked and prodded, nothing amiss, last resort, looked at fuel filter, looks brand new, pulled it, poured the fuel into my hand, bloody water, grrr

Sorted that out, no dramas.

you have a sight glass on the carby yeah?

go for a drive, make it do it, as soon as it does get on the clutch, turn it off and pull over and check if the bowl is empty

No sight glass, some other dude has one with a glass. My options are pull the top off the carby or pull a bung out, bung would be easier! Might do that thisavo? Now if it is a dry bowl, what do I look at next? Sorry for block of text, out and about on phone

what if I've already got my spare fuel pump on? I guess the carby is going to come apart then if that's the case!

blocked fuel lines, lines hooked up to the carby or pump the wrong way around, blocked breather in the tank (unlikely in this case)

Replaced the rubber lines yesterday, should be hooked up correctly - tank-filter-pump. Return is separate line.

I changed the dizzy vacuum advance and carbon canister lines over on the carby thismorning as my mrs brothers stock sierra had them opposite to mine.

Now i've got the dizzy vac advance on the top and cc on the bottom.

Actually that blocked breather idea doesn't sound so silly, I put the compressor on the main fuel line and blew it out (with the filter disconnected) I put the compressor on the return line and it blew fuel out the main line (still disconnected at filter) Maybe I need to try it again with the main line hooked up to see if the breather line is working?

Or just go for a quick spin with the fuel cap off!

I've gotta eat lunch and then go pick up my guitar from a mates place, when I get home from that I'll go do the drain plug test on the carby. I hope it's not the needle and seat sticking, I don't want to have to pull the thing apart again...

Nope, fuel pump is only connected to the line from the tank, the return line to the tank, and the bowl feed on the carby which is at the top on the front.

I don't know if I'll get to do any more testing thisavo, plans changed and it will be dark before I get a go at it.

So I swapped my carby with Anto86's this afternoon for a test run and what do you know, the thing ran GREAT!

So basically it's my carby, I'll have another go at working out what's wrong, before I save up the $500 for a reconditioned one.

As a bonus, my zook wasn't running rich like anto86's with his carby on it, so we are guessing that his timing is out.

Yeh so did I but I wanted to make sure before I lashed out when I've asked at two different places and been told $450+

One was the car clinic down here who said around $450 I think plus parts (I had heard they were good with carbies and this was in december when I first got the zook)

The other was a week or two ago at one stop suzi shop, I'm sure he said it was around $450.

$250 is way better, you say yours hasn't missed a beat since? Where'd you get it done?

A place up here at Redcliffe, Carb tech automotive. $250 was for me taking the carb off though, and I gave him a shitty old one to rob spares if he needed it. That was about 18 months ago.

Damn, I haven't got any carb spares, I'll get a few other quotes from around here.

I'm not afraid to take the thing off, hell I'm happy to pull it apart myself (not that I would if it'd been rebuilt properly and was working fine...)

Also, they are quite quick to swap over once you've done it a few times!

Get yourself a rebuild kit and a can of carby cleaner and have a go. Just take your time and you'll be fine! When you do, make sure you whack a filter in between the pump and the carby, if you get a clear one, the added bonus is you can see that the pump is working.

Actually, come to think of it. I had to do mine a year or two ago, I did the full rebuild but could never get it right. In the end I took it down to oozuk for him to look at. I can't remember what it was but there was something worn that a rebuild didn't fix.... ummmmm.... maybe oozuk has a better memory than me. Apparently it was a common issue.

Anyway, I grabbed a second hand carby from another AZ member, whacked all the gear from the rebuild kit out of the old carb and put it into the new one and Bob's your uncle's lover, it worked!!

Indeed I have had a go at it, I'll have another go at it myself before I pay for it to be done!

That is unless OOZUK lives somewhere down this way and wouldn't mine helping out in return for some booze? I could even bring the carby up to brisvegas if he's up there and it was gonna save me some real coin.

I might pm him and see if he knows anymore either way!

Also, I've been dreaming about fixing the zook too, sometimes this carby problem, sometimes other things, I also dream about work way too much at the moment (new job) and I wake up like ffs I just did a nights work...

But yeh, I'll pm him tomorrow.
