You can break em on standard tyres, its just made easier by bigger tyres.
It depends on what lift you have first because 30's will be rubbing the shit out of the guards easy with no lift.

depends on the terrain in mud i think you could run what ever size you wanted all day with no issues
on rock is another story i blew mine up with 29 inch tyres

I ran 30x9.5R15 Maxxis Buckshot's on standard rim, with no lift. Had no scrubbing issues.

You also have to take into account rim width and offset

I run 215's on standard rim no lift and they don't even come close to hitting. so yeah i'd say that would be a pretty safe bet
