In the absence of the old thread I started, here's a new one...


Does anyone have any ideas how to remove a really tough flange?

I've got the ones that go to front and rear diff loose, but the one that comes form gear box is a bastard.

The other two were extra tight so I expect this one to be similar, but so car can't get enough omph to crack it.

Rattle gun doesn't have enough kick to loosen it, and the 2m breaker bar I used on the other two is no good as I have nothing to lock the flange against (since the other two are loose).

Any ideas or volunteers to get it undone?

You need to make up a tool to hold the flange then get a decent rattle gun onto it

Heat, and some Wd40, and a really long breaker bar. i use a big bit of flat bar with two holes drilled in it to hold the flange.

Even though you've undone the nut on the other flanges, what's to stop you sliding the flanges on to the splines without fitting the nuts back on? Then you can use them to stop the input flange turning.

Even so, locking or holding the other flanges to undo the nut on another flange isn't the best way to go. Any turning force (Torque) is borne by the gear train instead of being directly applied to turning the nut off the shaft. This can be particularly damaging to the gear teeth when using a rattle gun. Try to lock the flange using the bolt holes, or clamp the flange in a vice.

I normaly find an 3/4" rattle gun will undo them pretty easy.

I have a bucket full of bolts from dad that I will try to find some to lock the rear output flange in with. hopefully the ones on my 1.3L case aren't such a bastard.

i had to use a cold chisel to get one of mine off just to crack it then it rattled straight off

This is how I did mine, im not sure if this will translate to a 1lt case though??
I just bolted my spare breaker on with one bolt, held it in the vice and pulled the long edge of the bar against the side of the flange in the direction i was pulling too loosen..

just tried this and snapped about 10 bolts I tried with...

I was using high tensile 10mm bolts, and they bent but didnt snap. The first bolt i used was a stainless and it snapped...

If thats not working... good luck

It's not stuck because it's seized, it's just tight. You need a decent rattle gun to get it loose.

Correct. A 1" drive 240volt electric rattle guyn that will either undo ANY bolt or shear it, either way it gets shit apart.

Have you checked that the nut has not been punched in on the edges, where the shaft has a small recess?

I have bent the nut indent bits back out.

With the case in gear, do you think just holding one of the output flanges will be enough?

When I tried with a rattle gun the kicks from the gun were too quick and holding it has providing little help for this.

don't need to with my rattle gun. it spins the nut off before the shaft has even had a chance to think about spinning.

try bolting on a drive shaft onto one of the flanges when the case is in gear. if you have a large set of multi grips or pipe wrench clamp that onto the uni and get someone to hold onto it. If you can heat up the nut and try the rattle gun straight away.

if all else fails, try a bigger rattle gun or get a long piece of pipe to extend your breaker bar.

get a bit of flat bar and drill 2 holes on the edge that can be bolted onto the flange using 2 bolts. then with a big breaker bar just scissor them together. Its all about leaverage. Havent found a Flange nut that wont undo yet using this method. Ill try to get a pic for you.

Rhino has been kind enough to offer to take it to his work tomorrow and try with a vice and big rattle gun.
