Sorry guys. Updated original post.

It's a 1997 Lwb Vitara. G16b engine with 300,000km on the clock. Due for a timing belt.

Passed a rwc but check engine light stays on. Mechanic said it's just an electrical fault. He's gonna take the fuse out and see if that resets everything.

Anyone know where to find the error codes list on the net? Can't find them.
What are peoples thoughts

My engine light (and the brake warning light) stay on sometimes. Mine is due to the ignition barrel being worn and the key not returning to the ON position fully after being turned past that point to engage the starter motor. When it stays on I can wiggle the key and the warning lights go out.

Was told this:

Diagnose - Code 41 presents ignition signal fail. Cleared code several times keeps reappearing. Possible distributor module not sending feedback to ECM (engine control module)
Further Diagnosis required"

code 41 is the CAS signal (crank angle sensor) , and off the top of my head , it will only throw the code if the ecu/ecm doesnt see a ignition signal for 2 or 3 seconds , meaning the car wont start usually , i have the diagnostic info on my external hard drive ,but my pc is being a bitch atm and wont recognise my external hdd.

Don't mean to offend you. You obviously know your stuff.

From what I've read though code 42 is CAS. 41 is ignition failsafe?

Correct me if I'm wrong?

ok the manual states , that it could be a faulty noise suppressor , or poor connection from the brown wire of the noise suppressor back to the ecu , or a faulty ecu , or open circuit between the ignition coil back to the brown wire from noise suppressor to ecu.

well , heres the odd thing, if it throws the code straight away , your engine shouldnt run , the ignition signal tells the ecu the car is still running and to fire the injectors , if the ecu doesnt get an ignition signal it cuts injectors from pulsing , so id say if its running fine its safe to drive , its not an emmision thing like an o2 sensor which if faulty can run rich , use excessive fuel and stuff up your cat etc.

I think it could be 02 sensor but why is it throwing 42?
Probably just an electrical fault. Wire could be earthed or something ?

I would check out kick-fix.com and check out his "fast sensor tests"

The site is fuck all for organised, but he has the Google site search at the top of most of his pages 'ta help.

With a multimeter, and a little patience you can test every sensor on the rig, it's easy as. For most sensors, you just check voltage or resistance hot, then cold, and it will tell you if it's good or not.
