hey there guys, im new to the forum but been reading threw and you guys have heaps of info up on here, was just wondering if anyone could help me out with some info, i have a 87 sierra with a 1ltr and a 4speed that has been making some noises so ive pulled it out to find its the bearings in the box not just the thrust bearing like i was hoping, i want to put a 5 speed in it and just needed to now what i need and what i need to do/modify eg mounts jackshaft uni's transfer flanges. i was hoping to take it to geraldon for easter (5-6hr trip) until this poped up so im trying to do it in a hury and cheep any help would be much apriciated

good luck finding a 1 litre 5 speed. (No, the 1.3 5 speeds do not fit)

Whilst it's correct to say a 1.3 litre 5 speed won't fit, an 87 1.0litre should be a type 3, which would allow the 5 speed 1.3 internals and tailshft housing to be used with the existing 1.0litre front case to build a 5 speed.

ZUKOFHZRD - It's not going to be cheap. to do it this way you need to buy a good 1.3 5 speed and swap everything over. It might be possible to swap to a 1.3 jackshaft and transfer case input flange to make everything work.

The bigger question is if your car has enough torque to hold road speed with the lower revs 5th gear allows. I bet it won't, and with even a slight headwind or on the slightest incline you'll be back to 4th. That's my guess, and it would explain why suzuki never put a 5 speed in the 1.0litre, even after 1.3's had had them for years.

ok, so to put the 5spd behing the 1ltr is the flywheel and clutch asembely the same, i think my box has been changed to a 4spd maruti and i was talking to a guy about that same internal gear swap, is it hard?

ended up rebuilding the box myself a couple of days before i went away, 1000k round trip plus a few kays up there and all is good, i love this little thing it goes almost anywhere, went up some fairly steep rocky hills and threw some mud and sand, got a good workout over the weekend, cant wait for the maxxis trepidors and a lift now
