good evening
Kinda looking into getting a GV for the misses, just wondering what some people are getting fuel economy wise out in the real world with the 2.5L V6. Seen a few figures quoted on a couple of sites but not too sure how believable they are
Also are they any common problems with them to look out for while on the search?
Cheers for any help

I only ever did one trip before I did a bunch of mods, but that one trip was Sydney to Melbourne and I got approx 650km out of one tank.
As for problems, the early models had a problem with the transfer case slipping from H4 to 2WD but it wasn't all of them.
most have a leaky front diff, timing chain rattle and a 99 model is most likely going to need a new clutch if it hasn't already been done and a new rear main seal. Mine is a 99 and I have had it all, but that's not to say that it will happen to all of them.
Great cars though, I would recommend them, but if your going to wheel it, get one with a steel front diff, but if not, I would recommend you look for an 02+ model.

Real world i was getting about 11L/100km in my 2.5 V6 manual....this was when it was stock.
Also what Mugwui mentioned - the GVs were updated in 01 which fixed the little problems with the earlier models.

Timing cover's leak oil, axle's are weak, you'll start talking with a lisp, speeding ticket's & dragging off ricer's will be a normal part of your day.
Enjoy, they drive very well & have plenty of power....

Agree with what has been said above, if you do decide to get one, get an 01 or more recent, Series 2 model !
Well i dont drive like a nanny in mine, and probably give it a bit more right foot than i should, but i still manage to get a min of 450+kms to a tank... as for h'way, i did two long streaches on it today, i clocked up 420kms, and still had over a quarter of a tank... when i filled up, it only took 45L to fill it, they have a 66L tank... but i am sure i could get much better economy if a drove it sedately...
I did notice that my new exhaust system, 2in straight thru, with High Flow caty, did improve power and economy... and i only feed my GV Premium Unleaded

Havnt had a speeding ticket yet...
But since i got my new, noisy exhaust, i get every tom, dick, and harry, in a big 4WD, and young guys in their hot cars, wanting a drag with me ...
So far, i have only been beaten once
Plenty of power they surely do have !

Well that all sounds pretty darn good to me. I was mainly looking at 99 type models due the price as they are couple grand cheaper down here but if its going to save us hassle in the long run it's probably worth it, im happy to work on my car maybe not so much the misses car plus we have a little one one the way so reliability would be nice
As for off road the most will probably see is some shitty tracks out on horse properties, so nothing too extreme, dont see diff strength etc being a real problem.
Cheers for all the help guys

That is very true, when it's a 100 zone and your 115 without even realizing until you get there and say "wow! that didn't take long to get here"

Cool !
Well, a 99 will be ok... and you might get lucky an have one with no problems... but with a 01 or newer, you will get a lower km zook... so in the long run it could be worth it to spend the extra...
It really doesnt take much to make the GV pretty damn good offroad... a lift kit makes a hell of a difference, its like driving a different car... i push mine pretty hard offroad, and no diff problems...
Once you get a GV and drive it, you will be thinking you wish you had bought it alot sooner, he he, they are a luxury 4x4 !

Went wheeling with a few sierra mates and all i kept hearing on the way home from everyone behind me was how much they hated me as i could hold 5th gear up the hills and even accelerate away with ease.
And the power slides they do on the nice wide corners is awsome

Yep they certainly do pull away easily... especially when you drop it back a cog, and plant the foot
Power slides
Havnt done them yet, well only in gravel... a little bit... he he...
But i can lay rubber very easily...

you won't think it so funny once you snap an axle, I once had to get a diff (complete) shipped up from Melbourne just for an axle, $1600 snapped axle....

Love mine. If you are not driving it hard you will have very little problems. If it is only for the missus I would look 03-05. my girlfriend drives our 04 around and hasn't had any trouble.

I dont do it on purpose, i dont want to wear my tyres prematurely and snap axles, but if you push the right foot enough, the wheels will spin, done it a couple of times by accident... i was just saying that it will, very easily...

Got another question for you all, how many km's is too many? I have no idea what the V6 is like in that regard.
I have found an '02 GV for a pretty decent price which is pretty immaculate condition interior and exterior, all orginal but has 200,000km on the clock. Seems to be pretty well maintained but havent seen any proof of this just yet

Well... that depends on how well it has been maintained/Serviced, and how it was driven.... my 01 GV had 195,000kms on it when i bought it, but it had a full service history, and one owner from new, it had done some offroading, as the fuel tank protector had a few dents... i was told by my Suzuki Mechanic, that these engines are good for 300,000, even 350,000kms... when you check it out, make sure you get to it when the engine is cold, and do a cold start, then listen for timing chain rattle, mine used to have maybe 2secs of rattle, but only on very cold mornings, but switching from a 15W40, to a 10W/40 Semi Synth oil, has reduced the rattle to almost Zero...
But i would say you really couldnt go wrong with a 02 GV, its the Series 2, which means all the early GV problems were fixed, and the engine had an increase in power... unless its really been abused, which it doesnt sound like, it is still a good Zook... i wouldnt pay anymore then $12,000 tops for it, use the 200,000kms on the clock as a bargaining point, play it up, say its high !

Awesome, they are only asking $8000 for it, so I will be sure to have a good double check over everything when I go back there tomorrow.
Cheers for your help

i thought that was an average price for one with those kms.
I got mine from a yard with 163,000kms but no reg or RWC for $5000. rego'd for under $6k

I'm averaging roudn the 14l/100km with the 225/75-16's and the lift - thats mostly round town driving, with my wifes heavy foot - longer trip is normally round the 11 mark - I did crack into the 9's once taking it easy.
Keep an eye out for the leaky front diff, and the tensioner rattle - bought mine at 115k its now done 211k and the only issues have been the front diff seal, the starter and the aircon compressor - everything else has just worked every day without any issues.

I bought my 99 model 4 years ago in immaculate condition with 148000km on for $6000. I have had all the usual problems, but I have driven it hard, so I expect and budget for problems. Its now got 152000km on it and it is looking a bit second hand, but it still runs great.
If you hunt long enough you will find a bargin.
I'll be driving it from Brisbane to Geelong in 2 weeks time, so I'll be able to give you some stats on fuel economy at the end of the trip...but I dond see it being a good result with all the mods.

I have an 02 shorty and driving Syd-Newy-Syd last week I got sub 10l/100km with 225/75R16 and lift. I have achieved 8's on highway trips before as well. Around town I get 10.5-11 when driving sedately.
I bought mine at 60,000km and now at 140,000km with a few repairs - starter, A/C x2 (thanks to mud), radiator
