Hey all.
Ive been reading around on this site for a couple of weeks now and like what alot of u have to say. I have a dilemma in that im not all that clued up in zooks and am looking to purchase one in the next 6 months. I am leaning towards a sierra tin top with leaf suspension and a 1.6 efi vit conversion... i am really undecided on the whole thing though. i would love to hear what some of you guys have to say on the issue... i know that each person is gonna be a bit bias towards their rig but id love to hear some honest pros and cons of each option:

jimny?
sierra soft top?
sierra tin top?
sierra leaf?
sierra coily?
vit 2.5?

Ive only ever had a hard top, but id never see myself wanting a soft top over it.

Plus the whole thing of people slashing soft tops kinda would shit me. Depends what you want it for and your situation really.

What do YOU want from it? Is it a daily driver? Weekend camper? tourer? Hardcore offroader? Do you have family/ kids etc?

Let us know more about what you want it for.

what terrain do you plan on driving, a GV/Vitara would be a better tourer where as a Sierra shines in the tougher terrain.

All thaose cars you have listed have different strengths and weaknesses* - it depends on what you want the car to do.


*Except the coil sierra. A nice dash and front clip is not enough of a "strength" to make up for all the weaknesses.

Well I currently ride a speed triple so my main reason for getting it is to keep me dry on we days getting to work!! But apart from that I would like to be able to go camping and fishing with it. Just moved to Goldie from the territory and am keen to go exploring around some of the islands and rivers etc. I don't plan on using the thing to do any massive trips across Australia or anything... I also want a car I can justthrow around and not have to worrie too much about hurting it!! I just sold my landrover 90 which was great but just sucked juice like a whore... I'm after something smaller and a little more bite... What's your recommendations?

Carby 1.3 leaf sierra either hard or soft top will be fine for you. Go for a Wide track model (89 onwards) if you can.

What is your budget?

welcome to the AZ and the goldie mate. For around the city and touring/ a little bit of offroad fun go for a vitara or grand vitara depending on what you got to spend. If you want a little more capability go for a jimny, although a jimny is smaller (less room for camping etc) and if you like rust repairs, sore backs and strange noises get a sierra hahaha

Thats a High top. Usually Narrow track (pre 89). All 1.3L carbys. They are marginally less stable on side slopes, but otherwise a good vehicle. If it had square headlights it was a Holden Drover. ( same as sierra)

Read his build thread and it sounds like he has really set it up... and i like the idea of a sealed cabin!!! im not up for getting wet (thats what the bike if for).

Needs to be roadworthy for that sort of coin IMO.

99 grand vitara awsome on the beach. has enough room to stretch your legs and has heaps of power when talking Suzuki 4x4's. Uses about the same amount of fuel as a sierra 10/11 L/100km. (correct me if I am wrong guys). The 99's are getting pretty cheap now days and I throw mine around and don't worry about it.

Yeah well thats exactly what i said to him when i posted him...? what do u think it is realistically worth? what would be a good deal... for me;)?

also i am a little concerned how this thing would drive on the highway... would it be terrible? whould it sit on 100? hmmmm...

I love the look of the little Jimny's but i am a bit concerned about the 1.3l engine... (as i am with the sierra which is why im looking for one with a conversion and compliance)... i guess im not really that fussed about which type i get but it has to meat a couple of key criteria:
enough power
already lifted
bar work done
any extra accessories are always good... i.e winch tow bar etc

im happy to do:
tyres
lights
battery
paint
interior
etc

i guess i just want the main stuff done so i dont have to worry or pay too much.... anyways let me know thoughts people...
