Hey fellas,

This could be normal but ill check anyway. When in 4wd High.ill attempt a fairly easy hill in first gear. 9/10 times the car.will lose revs. The peddle will be on the floor but the revs will drop to idle or below.

The clutch doesnt slip at all it just dies. Put it in 4wd low and it will crawl. However, occasionally it may do it under heaps of load.

Is this normal? Is it just because they are such a small motor ?

Thanks in advance !

I've only driven 3 times haha
Can you climb in say 3rd low??

Sometimes I need speed to get those chassis rails up a hill

You can climb in any gear you want.

Approach it in the gear for the speed you want, and as you slow down on the hill, change down to a lower gear so you can drive up.

You don't want to be hitting things with too much momentum though, that's how you break things and or come unstuck!

It just changes the final drive ratio again.

So for the same velocity (speed) in the same gear your engine will be turning slower (less rpm) to achieve said velocity because your tyres are bigger and cover more distance per revolution.

Long story short, bigger tyres = more speed for SAME rpm in Same gear but more load on the engine.

If you use your gearbox properly, you can choose a gear that will keep your engine in a driveable range for the speed you want. You wouldn't take off from the traffic lights in 5th high, consequently you wouldn't drive on the highway in low 1. It depends what speed you want to do, and the conditions.

Experiment if you are unsure, don't hit everything flat out, and try different gears on the same obstacle to see what difference it makes.

Alot of the time I don't bother with high range, I've noticed on dirt roads, If I have it in 2nd or 3rd High, I'd be travelling the same speed as 4th Low. I prefer low because it accelerates and decelerates much gooder in and out of corners and to me it feels a bit more predictable and safer.

Unless your driving long distance on straight dirt roads at over 60kph, leave it low.

Teracis just explained it smarterer.

Heh, I have a really tired engine in my zook, but it's a WT sierra with 6.5's running only 29's so it's geared low enough to actually be useable in high as well as low. That and the gears stack up so that low 5 is a touch higher than high 1, which means that if I'm going to do 50km/h or so, I'm not going to be in low range.

As I said before, drive with your gearbox, choose a gear that you deem suitable to start in, and shift up and down to keep the motor in a good rev range to be able to respond to what you want to do. Don't just limit yourself to one gear for each obstacle and let the motor bog down or hit the limiter.
Exceptions to this are when you're driving through something you want to keep momentum on (e.g. mud or a really soft sand section) don't change up if you're revving too high, just let off some loud pedal, but DO change down if you're bogging down as you will soon stop if the engine does.

Something to know. These engines don't make power until higher in the rpm band. They like to rev.

They are not like a bigger car, and absolutely do not like to lug down. Too low an RPM and you will kill it. Keep the revs up.

What I do is find the gear that 1) Will keep the RPMS up, 2) will give me the speed that i want or need to have power for the hill.

On some hills it's 4th or 5th gear in low, some hills are 1st or even second or third in high range (smooth long hills). Then again some require a slow crawl and alot of power so I use 1st in low range.

Just start at the bottom and shift up as you need to. If you feel it starting to slow down, or the revs drop below 2000Rpm, shift down and put it to the wood :D

With a 30 inch tire you are nearing the limit for stock gears. Depending on what gears you have you can swap them out for a step lower to get the power lost from the tire change back where it is supposed to be.

Is that an MPFI 16 valve? If so rev it to the moon and show no mercy armsup

I feel bad hitting 5000rpm haha and sometimes I'm scared ill get caught up in the moment and redline it. To they have limiters?

I'm used to riding motorbikes I suppose. First gear for hills.

My biggest worry is some hills I get caught on the chassis and kind of teeter TOT. So I just give it some to force my way over it.....is that a bad idea ?

I guess it depends on what you are using for the pivot point aye?

5000Rpm is nothing for these motors some people cruise the freeway for hours at 4500 8O

A bit off topic. But when I drive in 2wd there's a grinding noise when I accelerate. On decelleration its quite but as soon as I apply throttle it gets noisy.

It's not a whine more of a grinding noise. Seems to have gotten really loud since I took the carpet out.

It's seems to come from the transfer case tho..... any ideas?
I need friends with a vitara so I can compare lol

Does it go away when you turn the radio up? problem solved ;)

Try replacing the diff and gear oil and see if that helps.

Funny, I'm running almost exactly the same setup, and I haven't really had any troubles at all.
