Well got me new toy on the road and took it out for a wheel last weekend. Goes great goes just as far as my patrol with a 7 inch lift and 35's and a v8. I had so much fun in it. So far I well first fixed the rust then painted it then put a 50 mm lift and a nice set of 31's. Next I masaged the guards so there was no sharp edges. So I took it out to glashouse and did some hard tracks and then just did our usual power lines run. It didn't fell to roolie but if and when it goes over there's not alot of support int the taxi bar and windscreen sournd so I have started making a cage at a mates work so here's some pics of what we've started. I'll post pics when I work out how to do it off me iPhone cos my Internet is down

good start but why is there a weld a few inches up from the mounting plate? you will have lost a lot of strength by adding that weld

Yep that was it. It's going to have a x in that hoop and will be a 6 point cage still way way way stronger than the taxi hoop

Well today i got my main hoop dressed up, painted and bolted in. I sandwiched plated it to the inner guard. Used 4x 10 mm hightensile bolts on each leg

Your following the lines nicely.

I know what you've built is infantly stronger than what was there to start with, but have a weld/breaking point right beside my head would concern me a little... I could just be over critical of it all too. :?

x2 its nice bar work but you have got critical weak points in all of the bars so far. Now that you have a template for the front ones I would be using a new length of tube and making new ones.

Yeh I cold or could just put padding on it and be happy with it it took a bit of efort to get right but it looks good with the lines. And if I wanted a proper cage I'd use chrommolly instead of 48 nb mild tube but yeh all welded join in a cage is a weak point but you have to join it with weld some time

Joins at an intersecting pipe are not considered weak points. Joins half way along a pipe are. If you had internally sleeved the join and put a few plug welds in there too ( which you could have done quite easily) It would be almost as good as if there were no join at all.

Still, its a nice looking cage. Perhaps you could weld in a corner gusset bar of 25nb that triangulates the top corners and overlaps the welds? Might help reduce any movement in the join when that top bar is impacted.
