Hey guys i did a quick search for jimny models and didnt find too much.

Basically im looking for your insight into the strenghts and weakeness of particualr jimny models. particulary interested in the differences bewteen vvt and previous models.
Also from wat i can find most people recomend the 3" toughdog kit with castor correction and triming guards for good operation and travel. any other recomendations?

easiest to mod are the 98-99 models as they dont have airbags and the transfer is on the floor (4wd and low range lever).

after that they get all high tech, including better engines.

The VVT's gearbox's are "suppose" to be a weak link, but i have had no issues yet. I am also ruuning the TD 80mm lift, the flex is great, but i am finding the arse end to firm for day to day driving it is fine if you have weight in the back though. I would recommend using a progressive rate coil in the back, if you are not planning on carrying to much weight. Also my caster angle is still out by 1deg with the bushs, so corrected arms would make it drive much better imo.

Trimming the gurads all depends on the to obsessive ones, tyre size? and rim off-set?

On another note, gearing SHOULD be addressed if going bigger than 215's.

Yeah ive been looking at vvt models as a preference due to the better engine. i was wondering how much better vvt's are (i guess zukenutter could shed some light on it).
what mods do airbags restict? bars? BL (wouldnt do BL anyway i figure coil spacers would be a better option) ...?

Don't qutoe me on this but after 2000 i think all jimny's had airnags, but you can still BL because of the type of airbags they have.

I'm not running gears yet. There are very few options been, sierra t-case with gears to suit tyre size or trail jimny gears which fopr the vvt jimny they coming in 20%, 27% and 35%. From what Zukenutter has worked out 235's with the 20% reduction gearing will mean 3840 rpm @100khp. The trail jimny gears are around $950 AUD to your door, but the price was 2 months ago now.

What size tyres and rim offset do you plan on running?

same as my sierra now and what u've got, 235/75/15 or perhaps 30x9.5 with f100 std. sunnies. It's all up in the air atm but i want to get some firm ideas. Thanks for the input

To run the 30X9.5 the less offset the better (less rubbing), 89_tintop was running them with 2" lift, and had very little rubbing, but no rim offset. I have neg13 and i get some pretty bad scrubbing at full flex, even with the 3" lift, but nothing some trimming won't fix. The 30X9.5 would be much better suited to the 20% reduction gearing.

or just buy the older model, do an engine swap, and run the 80mm lift with a body lift and 31s, like mine,
also allows u to fit custom bar work, bigger second battery and lots of other things

engine wise there is no comparison. I went from a 92 Sierra to an 03 JLX Jimny with the m13 motor in it. Still can't figure out if it's VVT or not, because no one has been able to tell me, but compared to the Sierra, it goes likes the powers of piss. Went on a run on the weekend and had no drama's keeping up to the Landcruisers and Patrols on the highway, even up steep hills.

:lol: fair enough but currently my sierra goes pretty hard. i was more interested in the difference between vvt and non, jimny models

smiffkid- that sounds like the right way to go but far too much effort

well mine has a rear locker, 80mm lift, 50mm body lift, 31s, g16b engine, dual batteries and a winch for under 6k

newer models have airbags but up till 04 they still have the transfer lever on the floor, and the old stile of dash an interior, and the ability to fold flat the rear seats individually

from 05 they change to the push buttons things.. :crazy: but if you re planing to do a sierra transfer swap you'll still have the hole in the floor for the lever :wink: so aint that bad

and if Im not wrong the vvt engines is a matter of the year of the jimny was released, all the newer models are, but dnt remember from which year

Sorry, only just saw this. Most has been said but here's some more.

1998 - August 2000 - No airbags, extra glove box, G series motor
August 2000 - 2005 - Air bags, M series motor. 4.09 diff ratios
2005 - current - VVT M Series, push button transfer, dash, crap rear seat, new front bumper with 2 inches less travel. 4.30 diff ratios, lower gearbox ratios and higher transfer ratios.

Haha. No! It's the other way around. If you swapped your electric transfer for a transfer from a Non VVT model you'd get a 30% total reduction in gearing. If you also swapped your diff centres you'd bring it back to about 25% total reduction.

On the flip side, somebody with an early Jimny would get about a 25% total reduction by swapping in a VVT gearbox.
Either way would require a modified jack shaft (the shaft between the gearbox and transfer) as the gearbox output splines are different.

I found all this out when I tried to run my Non VVT transfer (which had 24% reduction gears fitted) in my VVT Jimny. End result was about 50% reduction of high and low range. Top speed at 5000 rpm was 90km/h.
